Rob Reiner appears posthumously in Mel Brooks' new documentary, detailing how the comedian was there for his father, Carl Reiner, in his final moments. "Mel was there when my dad died," Rob said in Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man!, a two part documentary about the 99-year-old actor's most influential and memorable moments. "My dad was in the bathroom, and he just collapsed in the bathroom, and Mel came back and realized, 'Uh oh, something's wrong.' And my dad died, like, right after that." "For months, months, months he would come to the house after my father died ... He would sit there, watch television and have dinner, and he did that for months," Rob remembered of Brooks. "And he told us, the family, he said, 'Let me know when you're gonna sell the house.'" The Spinal Tap director joked that the Reiner family wanted to stage the house with Brooks in it to up the value for a potential sale. Rob Reiner Gave Heartfelt Public Tribute to Son Nick Years Before Death "He was that close to my dad where he wanted to be close to him even when my dad was gone," Rob continued. "I always thought even though Mel was only like four years younger than my dad, I think he looked to my dad as a father figure." Brooks, for his part, also reflected on the heartbreak he felt after Carl's death on June 29, 2020, at age 98. "I was still hoping that they would put the stuff on him and boom, get him up. I kept yelling at them, 'Keep it up, keep it up,' and they thought I was crazy after an hour of yelling at them," Brooks remembered telling paramedics, adding, "I just didn't want him to go. I wouldn't accept it. I loved him so much." Carl was also featured posthumously in the documentary, beaming with pride over Brooks' dedication to his work throughout his seven decades in Hollywood. "There was no question that he's gonna - whatever he decides to do, when he decides to do it, it was going to work," Carl explained. MARK RALSTON/AFP via Getty Images "He hates the word genius ... and I use the word genius not lightly. I understand the word. Genius has to not only produce something really good, but a volume of it," he continued. "And Mel, look at the volume he has produced. And if somebody wants to argue, they can, but they won't win." Following the filming of the documentary, the Reiner family experienced another unthinkable tragedy; Rob and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their Brentwood, California, home with stab wounds on December 14, 2025. They were 78 and 70, respectively. Hours later, their son Nick Reiner was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and held without bail. "Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day," Rob and Michele's kids Jake and Romy Reiner said in a statement to TMZ days after their parents' deaths. "The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren't just our parents; they were our best friends." Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner's Official Cause of Deaths Revealed "We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life," the statement continued. "We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave." If convicted, Nick, 32, faces life in prison without parole or the death penalty. A shakeup to Nick's legal team with the departure of lawyer Alan Jackson delayed his arraignment, and he has not yet entered a plea. A court hearing is set for February 23 with public defender Kimberly Greene stepping in to represent Nick. As for the reason behind Jackson's decision to withdraw from the high-profile murder case, he told Kelly Ripa during a Tuesday, January 13, episode of her Let's Talk Off Camera SiriusXM radio show, "Everybody's got that same looming question, and I am compelled because of legal standards and ethical obligations; there's certain things I simply can't divulge, Kelly, in terms of why there was a change in counsel, why we stepped away and the public defenders office stepped in and I will reiterate what I said in the press conference, which is, my team, me personally and my team, remain completely and utterly committed to Nick's best interest." Jackson continued, "We always will be committed to his best interests. I want nothing but the best for him and I want him to get the most robust defense that he possibly can get and I know he will in the hands of the public defender's office." Part one of Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man! premieres on Thursday, January 22, at 8 p.m. ET on HBO, followed by part two debuting Friday, January 23 at 8 p.m. ET. Both parts will be available to stream beginning Thursday, January 22, on HBO Max.
