Patrick Mahomes finally gave Chiefs Kingdom something to smile about after months of disappointment. Mahomes, 30, spoke to the media on Thursday, January 15, when he provided an update about his recovery process after undergoing surgery last month to repair his torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and LCL (lateral collateral ligament). "Rehab is going great so far," Mahomes said. "I'm hitting all the checkpoints that the doctor wants you to do. Getting the strength and range of mobility back. So that's been going great. Been doing all of it here in Kansas City so far." Mahomes continued, "I want to be ready for Week 1. The doctors said that I could be. I can't predict what's going to happen throughout the process, but that's my goal. I'll try to prepare myself to be ready to play in that Week 1 and have no restrictions." "I have to take it slow, but at the same time I'll push to be out there as much as I can be," Mahomes said. "We have a great plan in place as far as where we want to get to. We have to let it all play out and take it a day at a time, which has been hard for me." Mahomes tore both his ACL and LCL during a game against the Los Angeles Chargers on December 14. He was asked on Thursday about the "balance" of wanting to be back for the start of the season, while also taking his long-term football prospects into consideration. Travis Kelce Shows Off New Haircut and Shave as Retirement Decision Looms "That's something that I have to think of, something the coaches and the organization all have to think of," Mahomes said. "But at the same time, that's why they give me limits to where I can push it ... Knowing me, I'm going to push it to that exact limit every single day. There's places you can't go yet, which I want to but I can't go yet." In discussing the mental toll the injury has taken on him, Mahomes credited his work ethic and the support of his wife, Brittany Mahomes, and their three children. "It definitely weighs on your mental a little bit," he admitted. "But for me, just having that goal in mind of trying to get better every day and knowing what I'm striving to do - which is to be ready as quickly as possible and have a chance to play in that opening day game, no matter where it is, so that I'm there with my teammates and can be at training camp and doing what I need to do - think that's kind of pushed me through some of those mental hurdles." Mahomes added, "That, as well as having a great wife that's able to keep me involved with the kids. And the kids understanding that dad can't necessarily be the dad that I usually am throwing them around the couches and stuff like that."
