Soul Power: The Legend of the American Basketball Association, appropriately produced by the face of the relatively short-lived league "Dr. J" Julius Erving, will premiere Feb. 12 on Prime Video. The four-part docuseries is also produced by Common and George Karl, the legendary coach who also hooped in the ABA. Soul Power: The Legend of the American Basketball Association is directed by Kenan Kamwana Holley. Though the ABA lasted just nine seasons, it truly shaped the NBA (National Basketball Association) as we know it today. The ABA introduced the three-point shot and the slam dunk contest, and through its 1976 merger with the NBA, it also brought us franchises that are now the league's Brooklyn Nets, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs. In addition to Erving (and Karl, for that matter), the ABA birthed stars Moses Malone, Spencer Haywood, George Gervin and Rick Barry. The 2026 release of docuseries coincides with the 50th anniversary of the ABA's merger with the NBA - funny how things work out like that. Though untitled at the time, Soul Power was first ordered back in summer 2022 as one of the first projects greenlit under Amazon's growing sports banner. Prime Video stalled things a bit in anticipation of its NBA rights deal, and here we are. "The ABA wasn't just a league-it was a movement," Erving said in a statement. "It gave players freedom, creativity, and opportunity at a time when none of that was guaranteed. This series tells that story honestly and it educates people that the game we see today exists because of what we started back then." Soul Power: The Legend of the American Basketball Association is also executive produced by Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures. The docuseries is a co-production from Prime Video Sports, Truth+Media, Hidden Pictures and Holley Films.
