The musical, with a score by Alicia Keys, who is also a producer on the show, opened at the Shubert Theatre in April 2024. It will play its final performance on Feb. 22, with Brandon Victor Dixon, an original company member, rejoining the cast starting Jan. 27. The musical, which was capitalized for up to $22 million, has recouped, and returned 60 percent to investors, with further upside expected from the national tour and international productions. The musical saw a Christmas-week bump, up to $1.3 million, but grosses outside of holiday weeks have largely been under $1 million. The musical is inspired by Keys' life, growing up in an artist community in Hell's Kitchen. The story follows Ali, a 17-year-old girl, who wants to learn to play piano and pushes back against the boundaries set by her mother as she pursues a crush. Keys worked on the show for 13 years, helping to write the story and writing and arranging the score, which includes well-known hits from her catalog, including "Girl on Fire" and "Empire State of Mind," as well as new songs written for the show, such as "Kaleidoscope." "So much of this is an homage to the people I've met along the way and who they are and how they're so unique and different and how those worlds really create a community," Keys told The Hollywood Reporter in April 2024. Singer Ne-Yo joined the show in December, alongside a cast including Amanda Reid, Kelsee Kimmel, Yolanda Adams and Lamont Walker II. Dixon will take over the role when he joins the cast. The show came to Broadway after making its world premiere at the Public Theater in October 2023. On Broadway, Hell's Kitchen scored 13 Tony nominations, taking home two awards, for best performance by a leading actress in a musical (Maleah Joi Moon) and best performance by a featured actress in a musical (Kecia Lewis). The musical has a currently running national tour and plans to launch international productions in South Korea, Germany and Australia. The show's exit from the Shubert Theatre potentially leaves an opening for another show to come in before this year's Tony Awards deadline.
