Posted 30 minutes ago"She's So Real For That": Wanda Sykes Is Being Praised For The Absolutely Iconic Way That She Accepted Ricky Gervais's Golden Globe AwardWhile Ricky has posted about his win, he has notably not acknowledged Wanda's comments.by Stephanie SoteriouBuzzFeed StaffFacebookPinterestLink People are absolutely obsessed with the expert way that Wanda Sykes accepted Ricky Gervais's Golden Globe award during Sunday night's ceremony after the British comic was unable to attend in person. Rich Polk / Getty Images For reference, throughout his decadeslong career in the public eye, Ricky has been incredibly open about being an atheist, and regularly speaks out against God and those who believe in God during his stand-up specials as well as on social media. Gilbert Flores / Getty Images In addition, in recent years, Ricky's material has been branded anti-trans, with the media advocacy organization GLAAD even issuing a statement in response to his 2022 special SuperNature, where he joked about public bathroom access for transgender people, among other things. "It's full of graphic, dangerous, anti-trans rants masquerading as jokes." They also cited "anti-gay rhetoric, and inaccurate statements on HIV." Nbc / Getty Images Ricky has also faced public wrath for anti-trans comments on social media, which included defending J.K. Rowling after she was branded a trans-exclusionary radical feminist for her own anti-trans posts. Chris Jackson / Getty Images And Wanda referenced all of this when she took to the Golden Globes stage on Sunday to present the award for Best Stand-Up Comedy on Television, where she roasted each of the nominees. Gilbert Flores / Getty Images "Bill Maher, you give us so much. But, I would love a little less. Try less," 61-year-old Wanda began. "Brett Goldstein, you're handsome. You've got that great supervillain voice. You're charming. You would've made a great Menendez brother." Cbs Photo Archive / Getty Images Wanda went on to call Kevin Hart the "richest guy in the category" who "wants it the most" out of them all, before making comments about Kumail Nanjiani and Sarah Silverman. She then moved on to Ricky, who did not attend the event, saying: "Ricky Gervais, I love you for not being here. No, I love you, Ricky, because if you win, I get to accept the award on your behalf, and you're going to thank god and the trans community." Referencing Teyana Taylor's Best Supporting Actress speech, where she thanked God for "every lesson, every test, and every blessing" earlier in the evening, Wanda quipped: "Oh, Teyana, can I borrow your speech?" Rich Polk / Getty Images She then confirmed: "[The winner is] Ricky Gervais, because he would like to thank God and the trans community," before adding: "Ricky Gervais could not be here, so we will accept this on her behalf," as she walked off stage. CBS / Via x.com Obviously, people watching at home found this move from Wanda nothing short of iconic, and took to social media to praise her. Writing on a Reddit forum, one person wrote: "She's so real for that." CBS / Via x.com "She is a FUCKING ICON for this," another popular comment adds, while somebody else commented: "I wasn't sure I could love her any more than I already did, but I love being surprised.""Truly the highlight of the show for me," one more concluded. Interestingly, while Ricky has acknowledged his win across his social media platforms, he has not publicly acknowledged Wanda's comments. Instead, he simply wrote: "I fucking won. Again."
