He won best male actor in a drama film for The Secret Agent on Sunday night, one of two wins for the Brazilian feature, which also took home foreign language film. "Secret Agent is a film about memory, or the lack of memory, and generational trauma," he said, holding his statue. "I think if trauma can be passed along generations, values can too. So this is to the ones who are sticking with their values in difficult moments." He also thanked writer-director Kleber Mendonça Filho, whose film is set in 1977 amid a military dictatorship and follows a man who returns to his hometown to flee the country with his son. "Brother you are a genius and you are my brother. I thank you for this and many more other things," he said. The other men vying in the category were Joel Edgerton (Train Dreams), Oscar Isaac (Frankenstein), Dwayne Johnson (The Smashing Machine), Michael B. Jordan (Sinners) and Jeremy Allen White (Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere). The film bowed at Cannes, where Moura earned strong notices. "He's always been a good actor, but Mendonça Filho makes him a movie star," wrote The Hollywood Reporter's David Rooney in his review.
