Gerlach was arrested at the cemetery, and he reportedly admitted to police that he stole approximately 30 sets of human remains. Authorities then obtained a search warrant for Gerlach's home. As they looked through his residence and storage unit, officers from the CID, the Ephrata PD and Middle Creek Search and Rescue allegedly discovered more than 100 full or partial sets of human and skeletal remains. "Detectives walked into a horror movie come to life the other night," Rouse said in the release. "This is an unbelievable scene." Rouse added that some of the human remains allegedly belonged to children, with ABC 6 reporting that there were remains of months-old infants. Meanwhile, some of the remains were 200 years old. The remains were found in various conditions, according to Rouse. "Some were hanging, as it were. Some were pieced together, some were skulls on a shelf," he said. After noting that detectives recovered "an awful lot of bones," Rouse said that they are working "to piece together who they are, where they are from, and how many we are looking at." However, it's not currently clear why he was stealing human remains in the first place. "I grieve for those who are upset by this, who are going through it, who are trying to figure out if it is in fact their loved one or their child," Rouse said, per the news release. Gerlach is currently being held on a $1 million bail at Delaware County Prison. He is scheduled to attend a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, January 20.
