It was too good to be true. When news broke earlier this week that Bill Hader and Ali Wong went their separate ways after over two years of dating, sources told People there was nothing to stress about - they hadn't suffered some messy scandal that led to the split. Instead, it was said to be an even more heartbreaking realization: their lives just weren't on the same page anymore with work obligations and family life. It was easier to break up but remain friends than continue trying to make something work that was destined to fail. A rare kind of breakup in Hollywood - so rare, it's not even entirely true in this case. At least, sources are highly skeptical! Oh, man... Sources told the outlet there are likely other factors aside from work and scheduling that made it impossible for the romance to continue - and a lot of fingers are being pointed at Bill! For starters, this wasn't a shock to those in their inner circles. The split was apparently a long time coming - they'd been distant for MONTHS! An insider dished: "He was already on the outs with Ali." Oof. The shocking thing is that their friends never thought they'd even last this long. When they first got together, some friends placed bets on how long the romance would last. The general consensus was that they weren't a good match! Damn. The insider explained: "No one thought it would last because she is a super sweet girl, very normal, very fun and easy going, and he is not." The Saturday Night Live alum has a reputation for being "hilarious" and "clever" - but also "moody" and "cranky." The insider elaborated: "Bill is not the easiest to be around, he is tense and harsh a lot of the time, everyone knows this in Hollywood, that is why his nickname is Bill Hater, because he hates on certain things." Yikes! The source went on: "That is how Bill gets so many cute girls; he can be kind at times, but then he can be prickly. You never know what you're going to get with him." While opposites attract - it wasn't the case this time. How this may have played into his relationship, the insider speculated: "I guess she could take only so much." Ouch. This split comes at a particularly challenging time for the actor, too: "It's not a good time for Bill. He's approaching his 50s and he is alone again, but he shouldn't be shocked." Dang. Aside from the breakup, it's likely a very emotional time for him, considering his part in the Rob Reiner tragedy. Bill is one of the last people to see Rob and his wife Michele alive. They were all at Conan O'Brien's holiday party the night before the killings, and it was there that Bill got into an awkward confrontation with Nick Reiner, who was acting erratically all night and "interrupted" Bill's private conversation. When told to give them some privacy, Nick "stormed off." A source previously told DM that the Barry lead was "horrified" and "extremely sad" about the deaths and understandably didn't "want to be connected to this story." The insider explained: "Bill doesn't want this tragedy to be made about him, and any disagreement he may have had with Nick, Bill is refusing to talk about it." Fair! And now we know he's also been dealing with a heartbreak of his own. Tough. This is a lot messier than sources made it out to seem at first!
