What were Nick Viall and Natalie Joy thinking here?! Austen Kroll appeared on a new episode of The Viall Files on Wednesday, and the interview has gone viral online for all the wrong reasons! And it's all because of the super insensitive questions the couple asked about his late sister! Here's how it went down... At first, the group chatted about Austen's time on the popular Bravo show Southern Charm. But about ten minutes into the conversation, Natalie abruptly changed topics to his older sister, Kyle Kroll, who passed away at only 9 years old when she fell off a cliff during a family hiking trip. Austen, then 7, witnessed her tragic death. Awful. It is a painful subject, and one that the reality star seemed not to expect to be brought up so suddenly on the podcast. And yet Natalie did. She told Austen: "Quickly jumping out of 'Southern Charm,' I'm sure we're gonna jump right back into it, but going into your childhood, I didn't know this about your sister passing at 9." Natalie apologized and insisted he didn't have to answer her question, but she proceeded to ask him how old he was when Kyle died. For his part, Austen answered despite seemingly being uncomfortable. As we mentioned, he was 7. She went on to ask him more personal questions, including: "How did your family, because you're obviously so close to your family today, your parents and Katie. How did your family keep y'all together during that time?" The Bravo personality continued to be a good sport and responded: "One word: Katie. Katie came to our family and was the biggest blessing that the Kroll family could have ever gotten. Right, so. Our story is very interesting because it's like, if my older sister, Kyle, were here still, then my younger sister, Katie, wouldn't be here. It was literally a cause and effect, and so it is very interesting because we look back, of course, with the fondest... and we have family cries together." According to Austen, the period between Kylie's death and Katie's birth was "truly like the dark ages" for his family. He didn't even know the full extent of how bad things were until later on, and learned his parents were going through a very "torturous" time back then. We mean, how could he really know about what his parents were experiencing? Austen was so young and grieving himself. Everything changed when his little sister came into the world a year and a half later, though: "Then, my youngest sister came around and ... my younger sister was born, and that quite literally was like our family rebirth. We moved into a new house and like life could begin again." As Austen continued to talk about her death, his leg was bouncing - as if he was a bit on edge - but Nick and Natalie still didn't move on from the topic! Oof! Take a hint! The Bachelor alum wondered if his little sister had a spiritual connection with Kyle, despite never meeting her. Austen, once again, didn't shut down the question. He explained he never asked Katie, but thinks she does, and mentioned she always refers to her as "my sister." At that point, Natalie chimed in with another insensitive question. She asked if Austen was there when his sister fell. He responded yes, and she wasn't done. She wanted to know more details: "What was this cliff?" Girl, what?! Austen appeared nervous and refused to say more on the topic: "See, to talk about the town, it just got wiped off the map by a hurricane, and there was no love lost with my family on that one. So, I won't even say the name of the town, but there was no love lost with it and, yeah, I don't know." You can ask Austen about this tragedy, but you need to have some sensitivity and empathy during it! At least a better transition into the topic! Something! Jeez! Watch the awkward chat (below): That is... so hard to watch. And we aren't the only ones who think so. Many listeners stormed the comments section of the YouTube video to slam Nick and Natalie for their "careless" questions, writing: "You guys could not be more careless with your words. Austin was so kind as you both were so careless and flippant about his grief." "Natalie, that was the most unprofessional and rude segway into a question about his sister I've ever seen. Extremely insensitive. This is the problem with any influencer having a podcast, maybe get some training on how to do your job professionally and with class." "'What is this cliff'?! The way I gasped... Totally inappropriate." "Uh are you ok Natalie? What a rude and awful way to ask these questions about his sister.." "Kinda wild how you just randomly dive into his sister, that is a painful topic, with no empathetic transition into it, obviously he doesn't have a problem talking to you guys about it, but you can tell he was shocked at how you brought it up." "I hate the way Natalie asked questions about his sister. It was
