Nick Reiner reportedly suffered a major mental health setback in the weeks leading up to his parents' murders... and it's reportedly due to a change in his medication. In a new documentary airing on Friday titled TMZ Investigates: The Reiner Murders: What Really Happened, sources with direct knowledge talk about Nick's schizoaffective disorder diagnosis in 2020. According to the Mayo Clinic, the disorder is "marked by a mix of schizophrenia symptoms, such as hallucinations and delusions, and mood disorder symptoms, such as depression, mania and a milder form of mania called hypomania." The source reportedly would not tell the outlet why the doctor made the decision to switch up Nick's medication, but revealed the reason is shocking and makes no sense. Following his change in medicine, the Being Charlie screenwriter apparently became agitated, unpredictable, and more and more dangerous. Rob and Michele were reportedly frightened, but didn't know what to do... especially because doctors did not opt to place Nick on a psychiatric hold to try and once again adjust his meds and stabilize him. The source added that by the time of the murders, Nick had suffered a complete break from reality. How awful... This is reportedly being eyed as the meat of Nick's defense... that his doctor sent him on a path that made him legally insane. On Wednesday, a family friend opened up to The US Sun about how Nick's siblings Jake and Romy feel about him facing the death penalty: "Rob & Michele's family, despite everything, do not want Nick to get the death penalty, as they insist this horrific incident was the byproduct of a mental health crisis." They added: "Nick's symptoms took a turn for the worse after doctors adjusted his medication before the killings, which the family believes, triggered increasingly concerning behavior ... The family feels this was all a massive failure in his care and they firmly believe he was seriously ill when he did this." Such a horrific situation from end to end.
