Alan Ruck is looking back on Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Ruck, 69, exclusively told Us Weekly that starring as high school student Cameron Frye in the teen comedy, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in June, sparked a decades-long friendship with Matthew Broderick. "Matthew and I just made a movie together [The Best Is Yet to Come] after 40 years," Ruck shared at the premiere of The People We Meet on Vacation in Los Angeles on Tuesday, January 7. "It's funny... [Broderick] was on a talk show and somebody said, 'How was it?' I think it was Seth Meyers, and he said, 'What was it like?' [Broderick] said, 'It was just like continuing a conversation.' It's just kind of like we've been friends for an awfully long time." 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' Cast: Where Are They Now? Ruck and Broderick, 63, were costars in Ferris Bueller, where they played best friends Cameron and Ferris, respectively. The film, which follows the pair as they skip school for an epic adventure in downtown Chicago, became a cultural phenomenon when it was released in 1986. Ruck told Us that the movie and its subsequent success was "a really sweet time in my life." "Mostly, I remember that [feeling]," the actor recalled. "I just remember feeling good, just being happy." Paramount/Courtesy Everett Collection Broderick appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers in November 2025, where he told the late-night host that reuniting with Ruck on the set of Best Is Yet to Come "was like we never stopped." The costars filmed the movie in Vancouver last summer. "We do keep in touch a little bit, but it was just - it was like we continued a conversation that had started, you know, 40-, 30-something years [ago]," Broderick said. As the cast prepares to celebrate the anniversary of Ferris Bueller, Ruck shared that he's unsure if there are any surprises left to discover about the film. "I don't know if any stone has been left unturned," he told Us, adding that his love of filmmaking "has never changed." Everything to Know About 'People We Meet on Vacation' Netflix Adaptation That love is evident in Ruck's newest movie, The People We Meet on Vacation, where he stars as the quirky, but charming father of Emily Bader's Poppy Wright. The film follows Poppy and her polar-opposite best friend, Alex (Tom Blyth), on a series of vacations as they explore whether their friendship could lead to love. Ruck said that the rom-com, which is an adaptation of Emily Henry's bestselling novel of the same name, is what audiences are looking for in today's world. "I just think, right now, we need to laugh," Ruck explained. "I think we need a little bit of hope - especially anybody that's looking for their person. I got mine [wife Mireille Enos], so I'm good. I'm good. But anybody that's kind of in that situation, I think a movie like this makes you think like, 'Yeah, that can happen. Yeah, it's for real.' It can happen." The People We Meet on Vacation premieres on Netflix Friday, January 9.
