Andrea and her then-husband, Russell "Rusty" Yates, were living in Clear Lake, Texas, at the time of her crime, according to Biography.com. Clear Lake is about a 30-minute drive from Houston, Texas, which is where Andrea attended and earned her degree from the University of Texas School of Nursing. Why Was Andrea Yates Arrested? She was arrested after she drowned her and Rusty's five kids: Noah, 7, John, 5, Paul, 3, Luke, 2, and Mary, 6 months. Andrea allegedly believed that killing her children was the only way to save them from the devil. After Andrea was arrested, it was revealed that she was heavily influenced by the extreme teachings of preacher Michael Woroniecki. Andrea was initially convicted of capital murder in 2002 and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after forty years. However, the verdict was later overturned on appeal after it was revealed that forensic psychiatrist Park Dietz had given false testimony. The case was tried again in 2006, with a Texas jury finding that Yates was not guilty by reason of insanity. Where Does Andrea Yates Live Today? Since Andrea was found not guilty by insanity, it appears she has been focusing on her mental health. Andrea is currently living at Kerrville State Hospital in Kerrville, Texas, and has been since 2007, according to People. "She's where she wants to be. Where she needs to be," Andrea's former attorney, George Parnham, told ABC News in June 2021. "And I mean, hypothetically, where would she go? What would she do?" Five years earlier, Parnham told NBC News in September 2016 that Andrea was doing "remarkably well" and had no interest in leaving the hospital. "She has excellent care," he said. "The hospital where she is, there are no razor wires, there's no bars, there's no armed guards, no fences."
