Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman spoke to the press following Nick Reiner's recent court appearance. "In our criminal justice system every defendant is entitled to a lawyer who will zealously represent their interest and do so effectively," Hochman, 62, said in a press conference outside the courthouse on Wednesday, January 7. "So is Nick Reiner. Whether it's Alan Jackson or someone from the public defender's office or any lawyer, he's entitled to that lawyer. We'll make sure he gets that lawyer." Hochman was referring to Jackson's surprising announcement on Wednesday that he was stepping down as Reiner's counsel and he would be getting new representation from the public defender's office. Public defender Kimberly Greene was assigned Reiner's case. Amid the change in Reiner's legal team, Hochman stated that the district attorney's office would assist in a smooth transition. "In the process of dealing with that lawyer the DA's office will make sure that lawyer is provided with full discovery of all the facts that pertain to this particular situation," he continued. "Whether it's an interview or whether it's any type of video, whether it's any type of expert reports, we'll make sure that that lawyer gets the facts necessary to effectively represent their client in a court of law." Nick Reiner's Former Lawyer Alan Jackson Speaks Out After Stepping Down Hochman also shared that assistant head deputy of major crimes Habib Balian would be prosecuting the case and that he was "fully confident" in his team's ability to get justice for Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. "We are fully confident that a jury will convict Nick Reiner beyond a reasonable doubt of the brutal murders of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, and do so unanimously," he concluded. Nick, 32, appeared in court on Wednesday to be arraigned, but it was postponed after Jackson stepped down. His next hearing is scheduled for Monday, February 23. "They have the utmost trust in the legal process and will not comment further on matters related to the legal proceedings," a spokesperson for the Reiner family told The New York Times on Wednesday. Nick was arrested last month for the murders of his parents, Rob and Michele, after they were found dead inside their Los Angeles house. The couple were 78 and 70, respectively. Alan Jackson Avoided Question About Legal Fees in Nick Reiner Case In addition to Nick, Michele and Rob are survived by son Jake and daughter Romy. (Rob was also the adoptive father of his late ex-wife Penny Marshall's daughter, Tracy.) "Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day," Nick's siblings later wrote in a joint statement, breaking their silence on the tragedy. "The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren't just our parents; they were our best friends." They continued, "We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life. We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave."
