Wow. What in the world is going on?? On Wednesday, Nick Reiner showed up to court for what was supposed to be his arraignment. But a bomb was dropped when his heavy-hitting lawyer Alan Jackson withdrew from his case in a SHOCKING turn of events! Public defender Kimberly Greene was assigned to the high-profile case, and the next hearing was scheduled for February 23. Nick did not enter a plea at this time. Alan, who just won a massive case for Karen Read, was reportedly hired by the Reiner family because - despite the tragic and complicated killings of Rob and Michele - they still wanted to protect the 32-year-old, who was dealing with a mental health crisis at the time he allegedly murdered his parents. According to reports, Nick, who struggled with addiction most of his life, was diagnosed with schizophrenia and his meds had recently changed, causing his behavior to become unhinged. Sources said the family wanted him in a mental institution - not locked behind bars. But now? Alan's walking away, the family has had little to say on the matter, and he's got a public defender on his case - a massive shift! It's all hard to wrap our heads around, and Alan isn't making it any less confusing. The lawyer spoke to reporters outside the courthouse in LA on Wednesday, immediately after the hearing concluded. He did NOT mince words. He stated: "This morning, I had to withdraw as Nick Reiner's counsel. Circumstances beyond our control, but more importantly, circumstances beyond Nick's control, have dictated that sadly it's made it impossible for us to continue our representation of Nick." Unfortunately for everyone, he insisted he's "legally" and "ethically prohibited from explaining all the reasons why." But he argued: "But be clear. Be very, very clear about this: my team and I remain deeply, deeply committed to Nick Reiner and to his best interests. In fact, we know, we're not just convinced, we know that the legal process will reveal the true facts of the circumstances surrounding this case, Nick's case." What are those "true facts"?? He didn't go into detail about his investigation, but he made it extremely clear what he thinks of the situation. Addressing all the "speculation" that has circulated since the murders, Alan explained he and his team have worked tirelessly on the case for three weeks, and it's made one thing obvious to him: "On December 15th in the early morning hours, I was in New York at the time, and I got a call. Me and my team, we dropped everything, and for the last three weeks we have devoted literally every waking hour to protecting Nick and his interests. We've investigated this matter top to bottom, back to front. What we've learned - and you can take this to the bank - is that pursuant to the laws of this state, pursuant to the law in California, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder. Print that. Print that!" WHOA. What a statement. Alan continued: "We wish him the very, very best moving forward." Watch the entire press conference: Damn. What a bold declaration. As mentioned, Nick has not entered a plea at this time. There is lots of speculation he will plead not guilty by reason of insanity, but time will tell. Thoughts? Why do U think he had to quit? Does the Reiner family not want to pay for him anymore - and if so, why not? Share all your theories with us in the comments (below)!
