[Warning: Potentially Triggering Content] Authorities in Michigan say 26-year-old Peyton Bilbia (pictured above, right inset) was killed in a violent stabbing on New Year's Eve, a night that's supposed to be about fresh starts and hope. Instead, it ended with police responding to a welfare check at Bilbia's home in Milford, which is about 40 miles northwest of Detroit. And the man who allegedly killed Peyton was the ex-boyfriend of the victim's new girlfriend. And what officers found when they entered the home was devastating. A press release published days ago by the Milford Police Department stated: "[The victim] was dead with injuries consistent with a violent attack." Police quickly made it clear this was not a random act of violence, either. According to Milford Police Chief Scott Tarasiewicz in another release on Sunday, investigators believe the people involved knew each other, adding a chilling layer of intimacy to an already tragic crime: "It does not appear to be random. ... It is believed the victim and attacker were known to each other." Not long after that, authorities announced the arrest of 29-year-old Matthew Molinaro of Sterling Heights, Michigan. He has been identified as Bilbia's girlfriend's ex-boyfriend. Molinaro (pictured above left, in his mugshot) was taken into custody at a club in the city of Royal Oak on New Year's Eve, and is now charged with first-degree murder. He is being held at the Oakland County Jail and has been denied bond, according to court records viewed by Us Weekly and others. Chief Tarasiewicz did not mince words when addressing the seriousness of the case or the decision to pursue the highest level of charges: "I completely endorse the prosecutor's decision. The evidence in this case supports the harshest of criminal charges." As more details emerged, a disturbing picture formed. At the time of Bilbia's death, his girlfriend reportedly had a personal protective order in place related to her previous relationship with Molinaro. So, what should have been a clean break from a past relationship instead appears to have escalated into irreversible violence. Instead, his life was cut short because of what appears to be a domestic dispute. This case is a tragic reminder that the danger from domestic violence doesn't end when a relationship ends." Bilbia had moved to Milford earlier this year, worked for a flooring company, and was described in his obituary as someone who loved working out, biking, movies, music, dogs, and University of Michigan football. A GoFundMe set up by one of his sisters also spoke to the raw grief his family is now carrying: "Our family is heartbroken by the sudden and unexpected loss of my brother, Peyton, who passed away at just 26 years old.
