But while Nicole has to say goodbye to one longtime man in her life, she's leaning on another for support. On Monday, RadarOnline reported Russell has been a steadfast source of support for his longtime friend Nicole in the wake of her split - particularly since he's been in a similar situation with ex-wife Danielle Spencer, whom he was married to from 2003 to 2018: "Russell has been through his own heartbreaking divorce after 15 years of marriage, so he can empathize with Nicole in a way that not everyone in her world can." But with years of history, they never actually acted in a film together until 2018's Boy Erased - which at the time Russell gushed about getting to play her husband in: "I waited a long time to be married to Nicole." In the years since, the pair have remained close friends. An insider added the Gladiator star advised Nicole from his own experience that staying busy with work is a great remedy to mend a broken heart: "Russell throws himself into work when he's having a hard time, and Nicole is taking that advice to heart. She's signed on for one project after another. Some are even overlapping, so there's very little time for her to wallow in sadness. Russell has pushed for them to collaborate on something. He's sending her projects that he's interested in, pushing her to read them." All great things, right? Well, there's just one catch. The Oscar-winning actors' closeness has reportedly aggravated Russell's relationship with his longtime girlfriend Britney, whom he started dating in 2020. The insider shared: "Nicole is very clear that things between her and Russell are strictly platonic, but their closeness has people whispering and it's not going over well with his girlfriend. It's tough for Britney to see Russell giving all this attention to another woman, especially when the other woman is Nicole. It's bound to be threatening, but Russell is oblivious."
