An Ohio man is dead after a New Year's Day argument with his roommate over house rules turned fatal. Robert Palermo, 24, has been charged with aggravated murder in connection with the death of John "Lefty" Grehn, 61, who was a longtime friend of his father's. The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday, January 1, after the two men got into an argument over whether Grehn's dog should be allowed to stay inside the house. After the fight appeared to die down, Palermo allegedly took a gun out of its lock box and "reignited the argument" with his roommate, which resulted in Grehn being shot multiple times, per Law & Crime. Robert's father, John Palermo - who owned the Ohio home the two men were living in - called 911 and reported the shooting, according to the Ashland Source. Grehn was dead by the time officers arrived at the scene around 2:15 p.m. that day. "Mr. Palermo was taken into custody at the scene 'without incident and is currently being held at the Ashland County Jail,'" the press release from Ashland Police Department read. 13-Year-Old Found Dead From Apparent Animal Attack, Neighbor Arrested According to the criminal complaint, Palermo is accused of "purposely, and with prior calculation and design," causing the death of Grehn. If convicted, the 24-year-old could potentially face life in prison without the possibility of parole. However, Ashland County prosecuting attorney Christopher R. Tunnell confirmed they would not be seeking the death penalty as of yet. "The ongoing investigation has not revealed evidence of any aggravating circumstance set forth in [Ohio Law], which would be required before the possibility of a death sentence could be presented." the press release said. Palermo is currently incarcerated at the Ashland County Jail and is being held on $2 million bail. He has no known criminal history prior to this incident. As for Grehn, his cause of death appears to be a gunshot wound. His body was sent to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office earlier this month for further examination, which authorities confirmed is "standard procedure in homicide investigations of this nature." The autopsy results are still pending. Ohio Police Searching for Suspect in Home Invasion Murders of Couple On Friday, January 2, Tunnell released a statement on the incident, noting the case represented a "profound and tragic loss of life." "Our thoughts remain with Mr. Grehn's family, friends, and all those who loved him as they begin to process this unimaginable loss," he added. "Despite the terrible nature of this allegation, Ashland is and always will be a safe place to live and to raise a family." "While the world sometimes comes to us in a regrettable fashion, our focus should be on the positive response of our safety services and not on the negative aspects of one human's poor choices," Tunnel continued. "I commend the Ashland Police Division for their swift, professional, and thorough response to this incident, as well as their cooperation with and the services of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Ashland County Coroner's Office, Ashland County Sheriff's Office and the Ashland Fire Department." The investigation into Grehn's death is ongoing.
