A man in California has been arrested for hitting a mother and her 5-year-old child with his pickup truck while allegedly drunk driving through a Trader Joe's parking lot in the middle of the day. The Clovis Police Department revealed in a Facebook post on Sunday, January 4, that Steve Myer has been identified as the man who was behind the wheel of the pickup truck that was involved in the collision on Saturday, January 3. Officers responded to the Trader Joe's location in Clovis, California, at 2:23 p.m. after they received a report that a young child was hit by a vehicle. KFSN reported that the child, who is 5 years old, and the child's mother, whose age was not released, were struck by the vehicle. Both the mother and son were walking through the grocery store's parking lot at the time Myer, 62, allegedly struck them. Police said that the child was "awake and alert" and deemed to be in "stable condition with moderate injuries" when officers arrived at the scene. Meanwhile, the mother was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel. Myer remained at the scene and spoke to police following the incident, according to the outlet. He took part in a field sobriety test, which led police to believe that Myer was intoxicated while he was driving. He was then taken into custody without incident. Myer was charged with felony DUI and booked into the Fresno County Jail, according to the outlet. However, his name was not found on the inmate roster when checked on Monday, January 5. It is not currently known if Myer entered a plea or retained legal representation following his arrest. The Clovis Police Department did not immediately respond to Us Weekly's request for comment. While driving under the influence in California is normally a misdemeanor crime, it can also be charged as a felony offense in certain situations. The charge can be upgraded to a felony when the driver was already arrested for a prior felony charge, when the recent DUI is the driver's fourth offense within 10 years or when the driver is involved in a car accident that seriously injures or kills someone. Those who are charged with misdemeanor DUIs can face up to six months in jail and can be ordered to pay a $1,000 fine.
