Just one day after a woman in Maryland was reported missing by her ex-boyfriend, her dead body was found in his apartment - and investigators believe that he fled the country soon after he made the false report. Now, an international manhunt is underway as investigators are eager to track him down. Howard County Police Department confirmed that 27-year-old Nikitha Godishala was reported missing by her ex-boyfriend Arjun Sharma on Friday, January 2, according to a press release shared by the department. Sharma, 26, told police that he last saw Godishala on December 31, 2025, at his apartment in Columbia, Maryland. Police said that shortly after he filed the report, Sharma left the United States and is believed to have flown to his native India. Police entered his apartment unit on Saturday, January 3, where they found Godishala dead with multiple stab wounds. Detectives said that she was likely killed around 7 p.m. on New Year's Eve, per the department. Police have since set out on a manhunt to find and arrest Sharma, who is expected to face charges of first and second-degree murder in connection with his ex-girlfriend's death. Man Breaks Into Texas Apartment to Kidnap Ex, Gun Down Her New Boyfriend Howard County police spokesman Seth Hoffman told WJZ that Sharma and Godishala were believed to be on good terms following their split. "We do believe it wasn't uncommon that they would still meet each other and have communication after their relationship ended, but we don't have a motive right now as to why he would kill her," Hoffman added. Hoffman also said that authorities "are unaware of any previous calls for service or incidents involving the two of them." Both Sharma and Godishala were Indian nationals, though it's not clear when they moved to the United States or how long they were living in Maryland. Since it's believed that Sharma fled to India, authorities in the United States are working with federal law enforcement and international agencies to track him down overseas. It is believed that he flew out of Dulles Airport in Virginia on the same day that he reported Godishala was missing. "The U.S. Attorney's office works with Interpol, which is an international organization, and they will eventually issue what is known as a 'red notice'-basically an international arrest warrant," Hoffman said. "From there, that goes out to all the countries that work with Interpol, which is close to 200 countries including India, so that will give Indian authorities information. They will begin to track him and hopefully arrest him. From there, it could take quite a bit of time to process and hopefully get him extradited." Hoffman continued, "There was obviously some premeditation to be able to do this and then to flee the country." Tennessee Teen Shot and Killed by Ex-Boyfriend Shortly After Split The tragedy has left the community in shock, while neighbor Daniel Wheeler, Jr. recalled seeing police cars outside of the building while talking to WJZ. "I feel deeply sorry for the family," Wheeler told the outlet. "Guilty doesn't rest oftentimes, and whatever he's going through, he will ultimately have to face." Wheeler added that murders aren't common in the area. "The biggest thing you'll see over here is people fighting over parking spots. I like it like that myself," he said. "It's a very close-knit community. People are very friendly."
