An elderly veteran is in a coma after allegedly being attacked by a DoorDash driver over a seemingly simple request. On December 28, 75-year-old Michigan resident Lloyd Poole reportedly stepped out from his driveway and approached a food delivery worker to ask him to slow down when driving in the neighborhood. According to his daughter, Jen Shaw, the Doordasher then "punched him right in the side of the head." "My dad fell, never got up, never moved, and the DoorDash driver got back in his vehicle and drove away," Shaw told local news outlet WXYZ. Officers responded to a call about "an elderly male unconscious and unresponsive lying in the roadway" that evening, calling it a potential "road rage incident," per a Wixom Police press release. Tailgating Wisconsin Teen Accused of Beating Slower Driving Elderly Man Poole was taken to the hospital where he received emergency brain surgery that resulted in a piece of his skull being removed, but he has yet to wake up from the procedure. "He's not responding. He can't talk. He's not awake," Shaw continued. "We don't know when he's going to get out of this hospital bed. That may never happen." While his family has taken around the clock shifts watching him at the hospital as they hope for him to make a full recovery, they are all still "really worried" about his condition. "You just don't know with the brain, so we're very concerned," she added. Wixom Police confirmed that the Doordash driver, who was later identified as 40-year-old Ryan Turner, confessed to striking Poole and leaving him on the street. He was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. However, on Thursday, January 1, he posted a $35,000 bond and has been released from Oakland County Jail. It is unclear when he is expected to appear again in court. Mark Sanchez's Alleged Victim Wasn't Wearing Hearing Aids at Time of Incident Following his release, Shaw claimed Turner is able to go about his life "as normally as can be," but Poole's family is "definitely not" as they fear for both Poole's health, and other people that Turner could potentially harm if he were to take on another job as a driver. "He's out, wandering around," she added. "You just never know. I think you need to be careful because people are unpredictable." Poole's stepdaughter, Lindsey Gonzalez, echoed similar thoughts in a recent interview with Fox 2 Detroit. "It's scary," she said of Turner. "I want everybody in the public to know his face and stay away from him." As for DoorDash, a spokesperson for the company called the incident "absolutely appalling and unacceptable" in a statement shared with People earlier this week. "DoorDash has zero tolerance for violence, and we have permanently removed the individual's access to the platform," their statement read. "We are working with local law enforcement to support their investigation to ensure justice is served." This isn't Turner's first brush with the law. According to Charleston County court case details obtained by Us Weekly, he was previously charged with assault and battery in September 2022, but pled down to a lesser charge.
