Authorities in Ohio have arrested a 41-year-old mother they allege admitted to killing her toddler daughter by placing a plastic bag over her head. Sharon Sakoulos called 911 on Wednesday, December 31, to report her daughter Cassidy, 3, was not breathing, WSYX reports. When first responders arrived at Sakoulos' home at approximately 5:35 p.m., they claimed the mother was waiting for them outside, smoking a cigarette, the station reports. Sakoulos allegedly told police she watched Cassidy slowly suffocate after she placed the plastic bag over the little girl's head. Cassidy was rushed to Nationwide Children's Hospital, where doctors were unable to save her. She was dead by 6 p.m. Medical workers noted the presence of bruises on the girl's lifeless body. WSYX spoke with neighbors who said they saw Sakoulos outside when first responders pulled up to her home. "We were like, 'That's weird,' especially since the way the mom was standing there, like, reactionless," they said. The neighbors told the station that Sakoulos had a "weird energy" and was prone to "overstaying her welcome and not paying attention to the baby." In fact, she often leaned on neighbors to watch Cassidy. Sakoulos said she watched Cassidy die, holding the bag in place until the girl stopped moving. At her arraignment on Friday, December 26, prosecutors said Sakoulos has a violent past that includes a history of erratic behavior and mental illness. Prosecutors said that in 2023, she pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer by "[throwing] and [shaking] a container of AJAX cleaning substance" at the officer in 2020. In 2022, she was deemed incompetent to stand trial and spent some time being treated at the Twin Valley Behavioral Healthcare Hospital. Florida Mother Pleads Guilty After Watching Baby Slowly Asphyxiate Sakoulos was also accused of assaulting police officers in a 2016 incident - the outcome of which was unclear Friday. Prosecutors added that Sakoulos had a history of bipolar disorder and had been hospitalized for mental illness, the Columbus Dispatch reported. Sakoulos' public defender told the judge overseeing the arraignment she is a military veteran who was honorably discharged but did not specify what branch of the armed forces she served with. Scott Varner, communications director for Franklin County Children Services, told the Dispatch that the agency was not actively working with Sakoulos at the time of Cassidy's death. The agency did previously work with her, though the last contact they had with her was more than a year and a half ago, Varner told the paper. Sakoulos stands charged with murder and Us Weekly confirms she is being held on $2 million bond. She is scheduled to return to court on January 9. A judge barred her from leaving the county or having any contact with minors - including her 13-year-old daughter - should she post bond.
