So you don't have any plans on New Year's Day - that's not a big deal! There are plenty of shows to keep you company while you begin 2026. Netflix, in particular, has some great, comfortable shows to binge on New Year's Day, and not just the season finale of Stranger Things either. Between classic sitcoms, recently-added crime procedurals and new seasons of Netflix originals, the platform has plenty to dig into if you're planning on a chill way to ring in the New Year. Check out Watch With Us' five picks to start 2026 right. 5 Top New Movies and TV Shows to Watch This Week (December 30-January 2) 'Stranger Things' (2016-2025) You probably don't have time to catch up on all five seasons of Stranger Things in one day, but if you already have, then there's nothing better to watch than the series finale of one of the most popular shows of the last decade. After five seasons battling with the creatures of the Upside Down and Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), it all comes to a head as the show's final season heads to a close. With all the pieces on the chessboard and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) poised to make a critical sacrifice, the gang heads to their last confrontation with Vecna. 'Emily in Paris' (2020-Present) Originating in popularity as a hate-watch almost six years ago, Emily in Paris has significantly improved in quality and reception as it's gone on, with the most recent fifth season getting its highest Rotten Tomatoes score yet - 76 percent. Ultimately, fans and critics can't get enough of Miss Emily Cooper (Lily Collins), the marketing executive who once found herself whisked away to France when an American POV is needed at a French marketing firm. Now with a hunky new man, Emily has traded Paris for Italy, but finds herself caught between the two worlds she loves. There's nothing easier and breezier to watch than Emily in Paris, with its gorgeous locations, fun fashions and the ever-cheerful Emily still at it after all these years. Emily in Paris is pure escapist television at its finest, so if you're looking for nuanced characters and in-depth storylines, you won't get it. But you will get beautiful, unrealistic characters and ridiculous, absurd situations, which is sometimes all you need. 'The Closer' (2005-2012) Atlanta police detective Brenda Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick) relocates to Los Angeles, where she is tasked with heading up the division that handles sensitive, high-profile murder cases at the LAPD. Using her skills as a successful, CIA-trained "closer" - a person who doesn't just solve a case, but closes it with a full confession - the occasionally difficult (but lovable) Brenda works alongside her colleagues to put away criminals. The show features an ensemble cast including J.K. Simmons, Raymond Cruz and Corey Reynolds. Recently added to the Netflix library, if you throw on an episode of The Closer, you can't go wrong. Each episode sees Brenda and co. deal with a different crime which intermingles aspects of LA culture with law enforcement, and the show tackles complex themes while not shying away from adding some lighthearted humor. Brenda's interrogation scenes are some of the show's standout moments, a role that garnered Sedgwick an Emmy Award for Lead Actress in a Drama Series. 'Gilmore Girls' (2000-2007) In the humble Connecticut town of Stars Hollow, single mom Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) runs a local bed-and-breakfast, the Dragonfly Inn, alongside her best friend and chef, Sookie (Melissa McCarthy), while simultaneously caring for her teenage daughter, Rory (Alexis Bledel). The town features an eclectic cast of characters who come to interact with the mother-daughter pair in this beloved show about navigating the ups and downs of family, friendship and love. Gilmore Girls is one of the coziest, most warm-hearted shows you can dig into on a night with nothing to do - because when you hang out with the characters from Stars Hollow, it feels like you're really there with them. Gilmore Girls has stood the test of time for its sharp dialogue, nuanced character-writing, emotional family drama and thoughtful exploration of themes such as class dynamics, independence and education. 'Sex and the City' (1998-2004) In New York City, four high-powered women just want to have it all. Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) is the popular writer of a sex and dating column at The New York Star; Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) is a pragmatic, snarky lawyer with a cynical view towards romance; Charlotte (Kristin Davis) works at an art gallery and yearns for the perfect husband; and sexually-open, public relations executive Samantha (Kim Cattrall) isn't the marrying type. Together, the group of friends tries to traverse the impossible obstacle course that is dating in the big city. 26 Best Shows on Netflix Right Now (December 2025): 'The Closer' and More If you're looking for a good laugh, then you've come to the right place. Sex and the City remains one of the best sitcoms of all time for a reason, because it
