Chappell Roan is backtracking on her praise for the late Brigitte Bardot. On Sunday, the French actress's official animal rescue foundation, Fondation Brigitte Bardot, announced she had passed away at 91 years old. They revealed in a statement: "The Brigitte Bardot Foundation pays tribute to the memory of an exceptional woman who gave everything and gave up everything for a world more respectful of animals. Her legacy lives on through the actions and struggles the Foundation continues with the same passion and the same fidelity to her ideals." Related: Fans SLAM Kim Kardashian's Xmas Gift To Her 4 Kids! Tributes quickly started pouring in, including one from French President Emmanuel Macron and the Good Luck, Babe! singer. Chappell took to her Instagram Story to repost a vintage photo of Brigitte shared by Vogue France, and wrote: "She was my inspiration for red wine supernova. Rest in peace Ms. Bardot" See (below): (c) Chappell Roan/Instagram View this post on Instagram A post shared by Vogue France (@voguefrance) However, the somber tone surrounding Brigitte's death quickly started to shift as fans dug up evidence of some of the late model's far-right views. While her early acting career positioned her as one of the world's first sex symbols, Brigitte was later convicted in a court of law on multiple occasions throughout the '90s and 2000s on charges of inciting racial hatred - primarily targeting Muslims in Europe. Following her death, French newspaper Le Monde wrote: "Brigitte Bardot, the actress, was known for 'Le Mépris (Contempt)'; Bardot, the political figure, embodied racial hatred. Convicted five times for inciting racial hatred, Bardot remained, for three decades, an exception in French culture - the only celebrity to openly defend the far right ... Her advocacy for animals went hand in hand with her Islamophobia." In an open letter about animal slaughter, Brigitte once condemned the Muslim community, expressing disdain for the thought of a "Muslim France." She wrote: "They slaughter women and children, our monks, our civil servants, our tourists and our sheep, one day they'll slaughter us, and we'll have deserved it." WTF?!?! Well, it turns out Chappell stumbled onto some of that knowledge - and reacted by deleting her praise for Brigitte. In a subsequent Story post, she wrote: "Holy s**t i did not know all that insane s**t Ms. Bardot stood for obvs I do not condone this. very disappointing to learn."
