After it was announced that Bardot had died at age 91, the Grammy winner initially took to her Instagram Story on Sunday, writing, "Rest in peace Ms. Bardot. She was my inspiration for red wine supernova." However, she later deleted the post and shared in a new post on Monday, "Holy shit I did not know all that insane shit Mr. Bardot stood for. I do not condone this. Very disappointing to learn." While Bardot was known for her roles in And God Created Woman, The Truth and Contempt, she ultimately retired from acting in 1973, at the age of 39, to focus on animal rights activism. However, she later took a decidedly extremist tone in politics as a far-right supporter, backing National Front candidates, including Catherine Megret and Marine Le Pen. She frequently spoke out against the "Islamisation" of France, condemning the influx of immigrants into France, especially Muslims, the Associated Press reported. Bardot was also criticized for inciting racial hatred and for comparing homosexuals and pedophiles in her book. In 2018, she also denounced the #MeToo movement, saying at the time, "I thought it was nice to be told that I was beautiful or that I had a nice little ass."
