Three men who escaped a jail in Georgia were arrested Monday, December 22, in Florida after they were accused of putting a rope around a Lyft driver's neck and kidnapping her for ten hours. Stevenson Charles, Yusuf Minor and Naod Yohannes escaped DeKalb County Jail on Sunday, December 21, according to a news release from the United State Attorney's Office Southern District of Florida issued on Friday, December 26. In the early hours of December 22, Charles, 24, Minor, 31, and Yohannes, 25, hailed a Lyft car that was originally requested by a woman. Prosecutors said that Minor's girlfriend helped call the Lyft, according to the criminal complaint viewed by NBC News. As the car arrived at the destination, the Lyft driver unlocked the vehicle for the three men so they could get out of the car. However, one of the men then wrapped a rope around her neck while he sat in the backseat. The complaint went on to report that the driver was told several times to not struggle, or she would be killed. Additionally, the complaint also stated that the men threatened to rape and torture her. While speaking to authorities, the driver estimated she was kidnapped for about 10 hours. Prosecutors said that the men used the driver's credit cards to rent a short-term rental property in Miramar, Florida, per the criminal complaint. Authorities added that Charles and Yohannes took the driver's vehicle and left the rental property, while Minor remained behind with the victim. Authorities learned that the men escaped during a routine security check on the morning of December 22 and quickly launched a search to find Charles, Minor and Yohannes. The stolen vehicle was eventually detected by authorities with the help of license plate readers, and Charles and Yohannes were arrested. Meanwhile, Minor was arrested soon after when he was found at the short-term rental property with the driver. Minor is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Monday, December 29. Minor and Yohannes were both originally in prison serving life sentences for murder. Meanwhile, Charles was in prison after he was found guilty on murder and armed robbery charges. "This was a dangerous, violent felon serving a life sentence who escaped custody, kidnapped an innocent victim, crossed state lines, and brought that threat into our community," said U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding QuiƱones for the Southern District of Florida in a statement after the inmates were taken back to prison. "Law enforcement moved with speed, coordination, and resolve to hunt him down and take him off the streets. I'm proud of the U.S. Marshals, FBI, ATF, and our state and local partners who worked across jurisdictions to capture these fugitives, and of our prosecutors who are now ensuring they are held fully accountable."
