North Carolina congressman Richard Hudson recalled his final conversation with Cristina Grosu Biffle, the wife of NASCAR legend Greg Biffle, before Cristina, Greg and family died in a plane crash. "The last time I spoke with Cristina, just a couple of weeks ago, she reached out to ask how she could help with relief efforts in Jamaica," Hudson, 54, posted via X on Thursday, December 18. "That's who the Biffles were." Cristina and Greg were married in January 2023 and shared daughter Emma, 14. Greg was also the father of son Ryder, 4, from his previous marriage. All four family members are believed to have been on board Biffle's private aircraft when it crashed during an attempted landing at Statesville Regional Airport on Thursday morning. Greg Biffle Was a Dad of 2 Kids: All About the NASCAR Driver's Children "I am devastated by the loss of Greg, Cristina, and their children, and my heart is with all who loved them," Hudson wrote. "They were friends who lived their lives focused on helping others. Greg was a great NASCAR champion who thrilled millions of fans. But he was an extraordinary person as well, and will be remembered for his service to others as much as for his fearlessness on the track." Hudson added, "Our prayers are with their family, friends, and everyone grieving this unimaginable loss." "Unfortunately, I can confirm Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, daughter Emma and son Ryder were on that plane...because they were on their way to spend the afternoon with us," Mithcell wrote via Facebook on Thursday. "We are devastated. I'm so sorry to share this." North Carolina governor Josh Stein also addressed the Biffle plane crash during a press conference on Thursday. "Not a more tragic way to walk into the holiday season," Stein, 59, said. "I will say that the FBI, the state Bureau of Investigation, the highway patrol, they're on the site. They're working with the FAA. They're working with the local sheriff. This is a whole of government approach: local, state and federal. They're going to do everything they can to figure out what happened because we don't want these kinds of accidents to occur. Just heartbreaking." According to the Associated Press, six fatalities have been reported. The identity of the other two passengers on board is unknown at this time. After the plane took off from Statesville Regional Airport shortly after 10 a.m., it turned around and attempted to land back at the same location, per tracking data posted by FlightAware.com. Celebrity Deaths of 2025: NASCAR Star Greg Biffle and More Stars According to the data, the plane had planned to fly later from Sarasota, Florida, to Treasure Cay International Airport in the Bahamas before returning to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and then back to Statesville by Thursday evening. In a press release, AccuWeather reported conditions at the airport were "adverse" at the time of the crash. "Heavy drizzle and a cloud ceiling near 1,200 feet were reported at 10:15 a.m. The cloud ceiling had reportedly lowered to around 400 feet, with heavy rain reducing visibility to less than 2 miles at 10:30 a.m.," Dan DePodwin, AccuWeather Vice President of Forecasting Operations explained. DePodwin added, "Weather conditions are often a critical factor that investigators carefully review after a plane crash. It may take months to a year or longer for investigators to determine if the weather conditions contributed to the crash."
