Sheriff Country's midseason finale is going out with a bang - literally - by having Mickey and Travis rekindle their romance. In Us Weekly's exclusive first look at the Friday, December 19, episode of the hit CBS series, Mickey (Morena Baccarin) needs help getting rid of a squirrel in her home, which is where her ex-husband, Travis (Christopher Gorham), comes in. "Mickey, you can handle drug dealers and bank robbers, but you can't handle these cute little squirrels?" he teases his ex-wife, who fires back, "They're like rats with these fuzzy tails." The pair find themselves sharing a heated moment that ends with them hooking up while their daughter, Skye (Amanda Arcuri), is out of town. This comes as a surprise for many viewers who were introduced to Mickey and Travis as exes seemingly moving on from their marriage. A Breakdown of Everyone Related on 'Fire Country' "There's something about Mickey and Travis that I find deeply romantic," showrunner Matt Lopez exclusively told Us about deciding to reexplore Mickey and Travis as a couple. "There's something about two people who pretty much grew up together, got pregnant at the age of 18, raised a kid together, have been through all these trials and tribulations, grown apart and got divorced." Lopez argued that people "can fall in and out of love with someone" over the years. Christos Kalohoridis/CBS "But when you've gone through those kinds of experiences with someone, I believe Mickey and Travis have such a deep affection and admiration for each other that you never fully fall out of love with someone like that," he noted. "At the beginning of the season, Skye was implicated in her boyfriend's murder and it threw Mickey and Travis back into each other's orbit in a way that I don't think they had been in a while." Lopez continued: "I think there's also something unexpected to, 'Oh, who is Mickey going to fall for?' Well, probably the handsome partner who you know. But who is the last person you expect to fall for? Your ex. So it's been a fun story to tell." After being introduced on Fire Country, Baccarin, 46, stars as Sheriff Mickey Fox in Sheriff Country. The spinoff, which premiered in October, centers around Mickey as she investigates criminal activity and patrols the streets of her small town while dealing with her ex-con father and getting caught up in a murder case where her daughter is the prime suspect. Memorable 'Fire Country' Guest Stars: From Kane Brown to Jared Padalecki Season 1 has explored Mickey's love life, showing her secret (and casual) romance with undercover DEA agent Alec (Wes Chatham). Lopez previously teased that "there will be multiple surprises" headed our way as the series continues. "What we will unpack about Mickey is that since her divorce from Travis, her relationships have been few and fleeting," he shared. "She is a character who has some armor. She is a character who has placed her trust in people and had that trust betrayed. She does not wear her heart on her sleeve and she does not leap in both feet first." Lopez concluded: "She is cautious and can she leave her heart unguarded long enough to possibly have a chance at something? At something deeply meaningful. That's a question that will very much play out on screen." Sheriff Country airs on CBS Fridays at 8 p.m. ET.
