Peta Murgatroyd is reflecting on the onslaught of mom-shaming comments she received for returning to Dancing With the Stars within months of welcoming her first baby. "I would bring Shai to set with me on Dancing With the Stars all the time, and the nanny would come because I can't leave him in the trailer by himself," Murgatroyd, 39, said on the Monday, December 15, episode of her "Penthouse With Peta" podcast, referring to her now-8-year-old son. "It was, 'Why do you have a nanny? Do you really need that? Who's with the baby? You're spending so much time away from the baby.'" Murgatroyd gave birth to her and husband Maksim Chmerkovskiy's first baby, son Shai, in 2017. (The couple later welcomed sons Rio and Milan in 2023 and 2024, respectively.) "It was, like, four or five hours a day that I would be dancing. It wasn't that crazy," Murgatroyd recalled. "Then, I would be back to breast-feed. [The nanny] would bring him in so I could breast-feed. The producers would leave the room, I would breast-feed and they would come back in." Peta Murgatroyd Says She 'Would Feel Guilty' If She Had Another Baby She continued, "It's always worked for us, but I definitely got s*** for that, but now I don't give a s***. I am giving her flowers. She's the best thing ever." Murgatroyd returned to DWTS for season 24 just three months postpartum, where she danced with former Bachelor Nick Viall. She and Chmerkovskiy, now 45, also brought Shai along during the show's live tour the next year. "One of the best experiences we had, Shai was a year and 10 months when we went on tour, and he was on the bus with us [for] 65 cities," Chmerkovskiy said. "We had a crib on the bus, and it was, still to this day, one of the most magical experiences." According to Chmerkovskiy, he did end up getting "super stressed" having Shai and their nanny on the road with them. "[It was] winter in Boston, I open the door [and] he's naked on the floor of the shower. I'm, like, 'We're going to kill this baby,'" Chmerkovskiy quipped. "Now it's, like, 'Please, just put yourself in the bus.'" Maks Chmerkovskiy, Milan Chmerkovskiy, Shai Chmerkovskiy, Peta Murgatroyd and Rio Chmerkovskiy. Courtesy of Peta Murgatroyd/ Instagram Murgatroyd and Chmerkovskiy's podcast guests, Blake Horstmann and Giannina Gibelli, also revealed that they have received similar levels of mom-shaming for hiring a nanny to watch son Heath. "A lot of comments that I get ... are like, 'I wish I could [and] I can't,'" Gibelli, 32, said. "It hurts and I get it, and I'm a trigger point. It's, like, 'OK, fine. Unleash it, but don't be mad at me.'" The Love Is Blind alum gave birth to her first baby in 2024, subsequently employing a distant family member as Heath's nanny. "She lives with us. She's actually a family member twice removed," Gibelli explained. "She's, like, my adopted sister, auntie, cousin [and] I just feel she was always meant to be with us. It's crazy 'cause I had a baby and adopted a 36-year-old Colombian woman all in the same year, but it's my family and it's kind of the best thing ever."
