Nick Reiner's familial contention extended beyond what he experienced with his parents Rob and Michele... his behavior was enough to leave his sister Romy "traumatized," too. The screenwriter, who has been formally charged with two counts of first degree murder in his parents' brutal slayings, has allegedly "always been hostile and volatile" towards the family, including siblings Romy, 28, and Jake, 34. On Monday, a source opened up to Us Weekly about the "anger" he expressed: "A lot of his anger was directed at his parents for many, many years. They did everything a parent could possibly do to help him." As we previously reported, Nick struggled with feelings of resentment towards his father, who directed classics like The Princess Bride and Stand By Me, because he felt he wasn't "as talented." And then it became a cycle of seeking treatment for him, kicking him out, or him leaving the house, him moving back in." They claimed that dynamic "went on for years," which ended up having a profound impact on Rob and Michele's youngest daughter: "Romy has been so traumatized by Nick's behavior. She has always been so close with her parents, and watching their constant pain over Nick has impacted her and the whole family so much." That's so heartbreaking. The insider added: "Nick's problems have been going on for so long, so while everyone is in a state of shock right now, it's not entirely surprising." However, details of the confrontation were not revealed. Another source told Us Weekly: "It's been so much of their life. Rob and Michele were honest about their struggles with Nick, and those who spent time with the family saw it firsthand. Everyone who knew them and loved them is struggling right now, because it was never a secret." One night before Rob and Michele were found stabbed in their Brentwood, California home, they attended Conan O'Brien's holiday party with Nick, where attendees witnessed a heated argument between him and his father. According to the second source, the late couple's friends have now been left thinking, "What could we have done to help or to prevent this?" However, a third source chimed in to reveal that those who grew up with Nick aren't necessarily surprised by his arrest: "It didn't feel like an 'if' but only a matter of 'when' something catastrophic would happen." Such an immense tragedy. As we've been following, Nick struggled with drug addiction for years and was in and out of rehab. At times when he resisted help, he even experienced homelessness. Earlier this week, a yoga instructor who worked with Rob and Michele claimed Nick's behavioral issues were present from a very early age, when he frequently "interrupted pretty much all of [their] yoga sessions" with screaming fits . Our hearts are completely broken for the family - particularly for poor Romy who was reportedly the one to discover her parents. Rest in peace.
