If the real-life love story between the late Rob and Michele Reiner had never happened, one of the most iconic romance movie endings would've looked a whole lot different... Perezcious readers know the 1989 rom-com classic When Harry Met Sally ends with Harry (played by his best friend, Billy Crystal) running into Sally (portrayed by Meg Ryan) at a New Year's Eve party, where he tells her he loves her. But because of their history, Sally doesn't initially believe him, thinking he is only "lonely" and nothing more. Her words lead up to one of the most romantic moments in cinematic history - Harry professing all the things he loves about her, confessing he can't wait a single second longer to spend the rest of his life with her, before they share a kiss. The characters got married three months later. But get this... They almost didn't get their happily ever after! Rob, who directed the movie, revealed in several interviews before his tragic murder that Harry and Sally originally did NOT end up together. WHAT!? He explained on the Who's Talking to Chris Wallace show in February 2024: "I'd been single for 10 years, and I couldn't figure out how I was ever going to be with anybody. That gave birth to 'When Harry Met Sally.' I hadn't met anybody, so it was going to be the two of them seeing each other after years, talking, and then walking away from each other." What a horrible ending! OMG! Thankfully, Michele came into the picture at the right time! Rob told The Guardian in 2018 that he spotted a copy of Premiere magazine with Michelle Pfeiffer on the cover during pre-production for the film, adding: "I'd met her a few months before, she seemed like a nice person, and I read she was getting divorced, so I said to Barry Sonnenfeld [When Harry Met Sally ...'s director of photography], 'I'm going to give her a call.'" Barry nixed the idea, though. He declared instead: "'You're not going to call her, you're going to marry my friend Michele Singer.'" Rob wasn't too sure, but his mind changed three-quarters into filming when he saw a "very attractive woman" on set. That woman turned out to be Michele, and the rest was history. They fell in love and got married in 1989. And when Rob met Michele, he decided to change the final scenes of the movie: "Originally, Harry and Sally didn't get together. But then I met Michele and I thought: OK, I see how this works." Thank goodness he did! When Harry Met Sally is one of the most beloved rom-coms out there! Could you imagine if Harry and Sally never saw each other again? We ultimately have Rob's love for Michele to thank for the switch! Sadly, their real life love story came to a horrific end. The two were allegedly killed by their own son, Nick Reiner, in their Brentwood home on Sunday. Just awful. What are your reactions, Perezcious readers? Let us know in the comments.
