While on a red carpet, she was asked what the "worst gift" she'd ever received was - and she was more than happy to answer. "Like, all these books he thought I should read, and all these clothes that were what he wore instead of what I wore and... We didn't last, so." This is, of course, in reference to Jake Gyllenhaal, who Taylor embarked on a short-lived but seriously high-profile relationship with back in 2010, when she was just 20 years old, and he was 29. Jason Laveris / Getty Images While the romance only lasted a matter of weeks, it seemingly sparked a whole ton of inspiration in Taylor as Jake is widely believed to be the muse behind some of Taylor's most beloved songs - including her 10-minute-long mega-anthem "All Too Well," and her 2012 hit single "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together." Dimitrios Kambouris / Getty Images And the consistent theme throughout these key apparent Jake songs seems to be that he was, for lack of a better word, a bit of a snob towards Taylor when they were dating, which perfectly ties into the theory that he would be the kind of person to buy somebody the things that he liked rather than what they did. Bravo / Getty Images For example, in "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," Taylor sings: "You would hide away and find your peace of mind with some indie record that's much cooler than mine." Isaac Brekken / Getty Images Discussing the ex who inspired this song at the time, Taylor told USA Today: "He made me feel like I wasn't as good or as relevant as these hipster bands he listened to. So I made a song that I knew would absolutely drive him crazy." Then, in "I Bet You Think About Me," Taylor makes specific reference to an ex and his friends discussing books that weren't even on her radar, singing: "I tried to fit in with your upper-crust circles... They sit around talking about the meaning of life / And the book that just saved 'em that I hadn't heard of." AZLyrics / Via azlyrics.com Meanwhile, Taylor suggests that trying to keep up with her ex's expectations of cool ultimately ended up wearing her down in "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)," where she sings: "Your Brooklyn broke my skin and bones." The song's accompanying short film also appears to reference the apparent discomfort she felt when around her ex's sophisticated friends, with the woman protagonist shown desperately trying - and ultimately failing - to fit in with them at a dinner party.
