The "Dopey Podcast" creator and host David Manheim is sharing his experience with Nick Reiner after the screenwriter will be charged with the murders of his dad, Rob Reiner, and mom, Michele Singer Reiner. "The last time he called in, he spoke about being on coke and violently destroying his parents' guesthouse," Manheim exclusively tells Us Weekly. "But still that is not the same as violence towards another person. He never struck me as someone who was capable of murder." "He seemed to bounce around between a bunch of treatments, so he was resentful of that," Manheim adds, later noting, "I think it's very common [for addicts] to have animosity towards their parents." Nick, 32, was a guest on "Dopey," a self-help and comedy podcast about personal experiences with substance abuse and addiction, in 2018. At the time, he opened up about once destroying Rob and Michele's guest house while he was high "on meth." "I went 10 rounds in my guest house," he said. "It's not much of a story. I got totally spun out on uppers - I think it was coke and something else - and I was up for days on end. I started punching out some things in my guest house." Rob Reiner's Son Nick Was 'Always Hostile' Toward Family Before Murders Nick added that his fit of rage "started with the TV" before he "went over to the lamp." "Everything in the guest house got wrecked," he continued. "I literally punched the TV." While Nick admitted that there was "no logic" behind his outburst, he recalled being "pissed" that his parents told him he "had to go." Manheim says that the "hardest thing" for him to grasp was "how young [Nick] was when he came on the show." "I think he was 23 or 24, and he was so down on himself, and he was expected to be this person ... and when you are a drug addict and you're that young, it's very hard to get out of it," he continues. Michael Buckner/Getty Images "There is a whole scene of the children of these giants in Hollywood. All of the biggest names in Hollywood had kids, and those kids went out together. Some of them wound up drug addicts, and some of them just partied. And when you become a drug addict, you're not just partying anymore. You're on this ridiculous, crazy mission [to do drugs]," he tells Us. "Across the board, there is a line in the sand, and once you're seeking treatment multiple times and using substances like he was in the volume that he did, it changes from being in that scene to the bigger drug addict gestalt." Manheim also recalls the last time he heard from Nick during a recent podcast episode when he asked the Being Charlie screenwriter if his famous father could call into the show. "He got kind of annoyed at me. And then I've never heard from him again. And that was in 2018. I've probably texted him between five and 25 times a year since then," the podcaster says.
