Nick Reiner was once so grateful to have parents who cared as much as Rob and Michele Reiner. Following his arrest for their horrific murders, an interview featuring Rob and Nick has resurfaced this week, in which the latter gushed about his parents. In 2016, the filmmaker appeared on the 2 Chairs and a Microphone podcast. Host Paul Mecurio brought up the movie Being Charlie at one point, which you may know is a semi-autobiographical story written by Nick and directed by Rob. It is about a young adult who resents his parents' harsh treatment during his battle with addiction, as well as sending him off to rehab - and it mirrors a lot of what Nick went through. Related: Zooey Deschanel's 'Heart Is Broken' Over Death Of New Girl Dad Rob Reiner The 32-year-old struggled with drug addiction, checking into rehab for the first time at 15 years old. He went on to return 16 times after that. And when Nick refused treatment, he experienced "dark" times, including homelessness. Oof. Rob previously expressed regret over how he handled his son's issues. However, Nick felt he was just "lucky" to have a dad and mom who care about him so much. Halfway into the podcast conversation, he joined in to say: "I think I'm lucky in the sense that I have parents that care about me. Because of that, when I would go out and do things like drugs and stuff like that, I'd feel a tremendous amount of guilt. I'd think, 'They're thinking about me right now. They want me to do good.' ... Some people don't have parents that have any interest in them." What Nick shared really touched Rob. The director expressed: "[What] he just said really got me, which is that deep down he trusted that we loved him and that we were there for him. I think that's where we made the mistake. We didn't trust that he had that in him." It's all so chilling now that what we know happened 9 years later. How did he go from being so thankful for Rob and Michele's support to allegedly slitting their throats? Sigh. Drugs are terrible. In the same interview, Nick shared how growing up in a famous family led him down a "rebellious, angry, drug-addicted" path: "I don't think this is any different than most people going through their teenage years, but I think that I had no identity and I had no passions. I have a famous dad and a famous grandpa, and that fame sort of informs who you are, so I wanted to etch out my own identity with a more rebellious, angry, drug-addicted sort of persona." Yeah, since the horrific murders, we have heard that Nick "hated himself" and resented his dad due to his fame... In the interview, he went on to say there was a "level of self-medication" with his drug use, adding: "There was also a level of doing something radical and doing something to get outside of myself and comfort zone." He also felt being in and out of rehab made him feel less alone: "There's other people out here that suffer from [addiction] and they're willing to talk about it. That's why, I think, we did this movie, because we feel it's important to be upfront about this sort of stuff." It wasn't a smooth sailing process, though. Both Rob and Nick admitted to tension between them while making the film, but it was very collaborative. Rob continued: "I told him many times he's the heart and soul of the film, and he would have better insights as to what [main character] Charlie was experiencing than I would. I would defer to him." It's all just so gut-wrenching following Rob and Michele's deaths. Watch the podcast episode (below): If you or someone you know is experiencing substance abuse, help is available.
