Universal Pictures If you need reminding, Karen is married to Alan Rickman's character, Harry, and spends most of her time in the film being a dutiful wife and mom to their two daughters. When she's not buying his mother's Christmas present, she's crafting a papier-mâché lobster costume for their kids' upcoming show and organizing gifts for their school friends. Universal Pictures Harry, on the other hand, is being pursued by his much younger employee, Mia, at work, who he buys an expensive necklace, which Karen discovers in his coat pocket and naturally assumes is for her. So, when Christmas Eve rolls around and she instead receives a Joni Mitchell CD, the single most devastating scene in Christmas movie history quickly follows. Universal Pictures In a heartbreaking moment that has become one of the most infamous from the film, Karen excuses herself to her bedroom, where she plays the CD while allowing herself a brief cry. Soon after, she composes herself and goes back downstairs with a smile on her face for her young children as they head to the school show. Universal Pictures Karen calmly confronts Harry after the performance, with her speech expertly interjected with polite goodbyes and Christmas wishes to other people as they leave the school hall. She says to him: "Tell me, if you were in my position, what would you do?" Universal Pictures "Imagine your husband bought a gold necklace, and, come Christmas, gave it to somebody else... Would you wait around to find out if it's just a necklace, or if it's sex and a necklace, or if, worst of all, it's a necklace and love?" she asks. "Would you stay? Knowing life would always be a little bit worse? Or would you cut and run?" Universal Pictures "Oh, God," Harry replies. "I am so in the wrong, a classic fool." Through discreet tears, Karen says: "Yes, but you've also made a fool out of me. You've made the life I lead foolish, too." At this point, she spots her children and once again pulls herself together, excitedly exclaiming: "Darling, darlings! Oh, you were wonderful!" Universal Pictures The next time we see Karen and Harry is during the movie's closing montage, which takes place one month after Christmas. Karen and the kids are picking Harry up at the airport, and they greet one another with an extremely awkward kiss on the cheek. He asks: "How are you?" to which she repeats: "I'm fine. I'm fine!" Universal Pictures Looking visibly uncomfortable, she then tentatively adds: "Good to have you back," saying to the kids: "Come on, home." Universal Pictures In short, this final scene makes it obvious that all is very much not well between Harry and Karen, which is probably why people - including Emma herself - were left pretty shocked by Timothée Chalamet's total misread of the situation during Friday's episode of The Graham Norton Show. Frederic J. Brown / Getty Images In case you missed it, Timmy, Emma, and her Love Actually co-star Rowan Atkinson were on the British talk show together, and host Graham brought up the fact that it is Timothée's favorite Christmas movie. BBC "Love Actually, what a jam!" Timmy enthusiastically confirmed, he then turned to Emma and said: "I was rewatching it last night, and that's sort of a complicated, ethically, storyline, you know? Because you guys resolve the dispute quite easily." BBC Obviously confused, Emma replied: "Well, do you think? I don't think so. I think when he gets off that plane, Alan Rickman - god rest him, playing my husband - I think you just don't know. You know it'll never be the same again, that's the thing." BBC And Emma wasn't the only person baffled by Timmy's take on the storyline, with many people commenting on a TikTok clip of the interview moment to call out his ignorance. One person asked: "how can Tim seem so complex and intelligent in one clip and then miss something blindingly obvious in the next." Universal Pictures "what do you mean 'resolve the dispute quite easily'??? she was heart broken," another pointed out. One more wrote: "How could ANYONE think that Alan and Emma resolved their issue?!""Timmy not getting the point of that scene makes so much sense. I wonder if he think dune is set on long beach," somebody else joked. Another added: "each time i see timmy i realize you can be really talented as an actor and have zero understanding of a material."An incredibly popular comment read: "I just love when women correct boys," while somebody else simp
