A daycare center in New York City is closing its doors indefinitely after children that had been left in their charge were accidentally served from a water pitcher that contained a cleaning solution. Nearly five months after three employees at Bright Horizons Daycare were indicted in connection with alleged abuse, it was revealed that an employee "mistakenly" served a bleach solution to children on October 27. In an email from the city's Health Department, it was confirmed that the center's preschool program will indefinitely shut down after the children were exposed to a "toxic chemical," according to CBS News. Bright Horizons Daycare has since insisted that the incident was a mistake. "The safety and well-being of the children in our care is our highest priority," the organization said in a statement to the outlet. "Unfortunately, the staff member had mistakenly filled the pitcher from a dispenser which contained a diluted cleaning solution - prepared daily for sanitizing toys. This solution consists of two gallons of water mixed with a small amount of bleach." The Bright Horizons spokesperson said that a teacher also allegedly drank the cleaning solution, adding that they contacted poison control once they realized what had happened. Bright Horizons at Columbus Circle did not immediately respond to Us Weekly's request for comment. Kanye West Sued by Former Donda Academy Teachers: The Wildest Allegations Erin O'Connor, director of the NYU Early Childhood Education program, told CBS New York that the incident was "shocking." She continued, "One of the most basic structural indicators is that you have things set up in a way that there's no way a toxic material would be near a water supply for children. It gives me pause about how much was done in response to the first incident." The incident took place just months after former employees Evelyn Vargas, Shakia Henley and Latia Townes were arrested for allegedly abusing up to nine children that ranged in age from 1 and 2 years old over the summer, the Manhattan District Attorney's Office previously confirmed. Manhattan prosecutors have claimed that the former employees covered a child's mouth with tape, hit kids with metal water bottles, sprayed one child in the face with a bottle that was filled with "soap mixed with water and bleach" and dragged a girl by her hair, according to CBS New York. Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis Seek to Dismiss Nanny's Termination Case All three of the former employees have pleaded not guilty in the cases, which are still ongoing. Meanwhile, Bright Horizons previously told CBS New York that the company was cooperating with investigators and was committed to supporting the families of the children that suffered the alleged abuse. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office announced the former employees' indictment on July 30, stating they were all facing multiple counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Vargas is facing additional charges of assault, strangulation in the second degree and attempted assault, while Townes was also charged with three counts of attempted assault in the second degree. "As alleged, these day care workers abused and criminally mistreated multiple toddlers, no older than 24 months," District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Jr. wrote in a press release in July. "My office's Child Abuse Bureau is dedicated to protecting our youngest New Yorkers and is here to help them."
