A concerned parent blasted a Virginia school board for its alleged mishandling of the case of missing high school football coach Travis Turner. In an open letter posted via social media on Tuesday, December 9, Stephen Murray responded after the Wise County School Board did not allow public comment at their meeting the night before, the group's first gathering since Turner, 46, disappeared on November 20. "It was the silence that I was met with that felt all too familiar," Murray wrote. "We are dealing with two child predators in the last two years that have been employed, empowered, and emboldened by the Wise County School System." In addition to Union High School football coach and physical education teacher Turner - who has been charged with five counts of child pornography and five counts of using a computer to solicit a minor - former Union High teacher Timothy Lee Meador was indicted on three felony charges and pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent liberties with a child in 2023, ultimately serving 15 months in prison and receiving a ban from the school. School Was 'Aware' of Missing Coach's Allegations, But Failed to Act: Parent "It is appalling that the school board responsible for hiring these individuals would then choose to close their first meeting to the public, after the charges of Travis Turner have been issued," Murray continued. "What message does that send? The message I received tonight was, 'Nothing to see here.' I am not coming from a place of needing transparency about the investigation, rather, a place of needing accountability and communication from the people that are responsible for protecting our children while attending school." The Wise County School Board is set to meet again on January 12, where Murray said he hopes to address the "horrific situation." "My anger comes from a place of not wanting to dismantle the system but instead to strengthen it," he wrote. "I want us to work together to help dissolve this toxic culture that habitually puts our children's needs last and prioritizes the reputations of certain people just because they come from a legacy family in a small mountain town. I know you all can do better. That is why I am taking time out of my evening to write this." Murray concluded, "I will see you all in January." Search for Missing High School Football Coach Facing Grim Reality: Detective Wise County Public Schools issued a statement to News Channel 11 in response to the backlash, saying they are "aware of the concerns that have been raised publicly." "The division takes all matters involving student safety seriously and follows all required reporting laws, legal obligations, and established procedures," the statement said. "Certain matters, including personnel issues and ongoing law-enforcement activity, are confidential under Virginia law. As a result, the division is unable to provide additional details or comment further at this time. The school board conducts its business in accordance with Virginia's open-meeting laws. When closed sessions are held, they are limited to purposes permitted by law, and no final action is taken without being reported and voted on in an open meeting." Turner, who worked at Union High since 2011, was last seen by members of his family walking into the woods behind his home carrying a firearm. The United States Marshals Service and the FBI joined the search for Turner on December 1, which has employed the use of K-9 units, drones and a helicopter, but thus far come up empty.
