Matlock's creator addressed the speculation that a new cast member will be replacing Billy after David Del Rio was fired amid an investigation into sexual assault. Before the show's midseason finale aired on Thursday, December 11, news broke that Sarah Wright Olsen and Henry Haber are joining the season 2 cast. Wright Olsen will play Gwen, who is described as "an efficiency expert analyzing the firm" while Haber, 23, is Hunter a.k.a "a younger associate from the floater pool who is a total bro." Creator Jennie Snyder Urman weighed in on whether Haber is joining Matlock as a "replacement" for Del Rio, 38, who was fired in October after costar Leah Lewis accused him of sexual assault. "I'm not going to discuss details, but what I can talk about is in terms of the show," Urman told Deadline. "The last episode you see [Billy] is in 7, and then you find out how Billy's story ends, which is in a very organic way that has to do with our whole office and how things are being shaped in this merger." Where Was David Del Rio's 'Matlock' Story Line Going Before Firing? Urman teased how Hunter fits into the equation, saying, "We're always bringing in new associates, new people, because we want to give our characters different energies to react to, and different obstacles to overcome. And one thing that we were talking about in the writers' room that we've been wanting to bring in is a bro, like a real bro." Hunter will show what it would be like for Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) and Matty (Kathy Bates) to "be around a bro" in the office. Kathy Bates, David Del Rio, Leah Lewis and Skye P. Marshall on 'Matlock.' Sonja Flemming/CBS "They've been with characters that really see them as the pinnacle and do things their way. But what happens when you have somebody who spreads a little bit and shoots a basketball when he wants to have ideas flowing?" she continued. "What is that like in our ladies' world? And I'll tell you, it's funny." Olsen and Haber are joining the show after the midseason finale showed Sarah (Lewis) having a conversation with offscreen Billy about his girlfriend's miscarriage. The reveal came after Billy had a largely limited role in recent episodes. He was expected to be written off after news broke that Del Rio was fired. Which 'Matlock' Stars Are - And Aren't - Returning for Season 2? An alleged incident involving Del Rio and Lewis, 28, took place in late September. Del Rio was "fired and escorted off the lot the same day the alleged assault was reported," according to Deadline. Del Rio has yet to address his firing, but Us Weekly confirmed that CBS has reopened its investigation into the incident one day before Thursday's episode aired. Before the fall finale aired, Lewis - and the rest of the Matlock cast - returned back on set for the first time since Del Rio's exit. Beau Bridges recently spoke with Mario Lopez during an interview about the show's plans to start filming the second part of Matlock season 2 before Christmas. "I don't want to give up too much. We've already done half of the second season, and we're getting back at it in about a week to do the second half," Bridges, 83, shared. "But I'll just say that Senior always has a few tricks up his sleeve, which I'm happy that's true." Matlock returns to CBS Thursday, February 26, at 9 p.m. ET.
