The fate of failed businessman Massachusetts Brian Walshe - accused of killing his wife, Ana Walshe, on New Year's Day in 2023 - now rests with jurors/was decided by jurors Friday, December 12. Closing arguments were offered on Friday in Walshe's first-degree murder trial. Walshe, 50, is being tried for the 2023 murder and dismemberment of his 39-year-old wife. Walshe allegedly left her body parts in a dumpster. Her remains have never been recovered. While he pleaded guilty to misleading police and unlawfully conveying a body long ago, Walshe - who has maintained his innocence since his arrest - pleaded not guilty to his wife's grizzly murder. The gallery in the Dedham courtroom where the trial has been held was filled with Ana's friends and family on Friday, according to MassLive.com. In his closing argument, Walshe's defense lawyer Larry Tipton insisted his client loved his wife and posited something "sudden" and "unbelievable" happened to Ana, claiming she died of natural causes. "What would cause a loving husband and a loving father to do the things that we've heard about in this case?" he asked, according to MassLive.com. "Could it be something that was sudden? That was unexpected? that was unbelievable?" Tipton said none of the evidence supported a conviction. "Without a motive, without a reason ... you have a sudden and unexpected event that results in confusion, panic and fear," Tipton said. "All of those things that are so troubling, horrific, they may argue they show consciousness of guilt." He also called into question the investigative techniques used by detectives. Prosecutor Anne Yas rejected the suggestion Ana died from natural causes, telling jurors, "Ana Walshe is dead because he murdered her." Yas added, "The defendant deliberately got rid of Ana Walshe's body. The defendant did not want anyone to find Ana's body and to know how she died. The defendant intended to kill Ana Walshe. He didn't just want her dead; he needed her dead." Prosecutors revealed that Walshe searched the web for "best way to dispose of a body," "how long for someone to be missing to inherit" and "best way to dispose of body parts after a murder" on January 1, 2023. Where Is Brian Laundrie's Family After Gabby Petito's Murder and His Death? Ana was working in Washington, D.C., at the time of her murder, returning to Massachusetts on weekends as Brian tried getting his own business off the ground. Ana was having an affair with D.C. realtor William Fastow, and there is no way of telling whether Brian was aware of it, and if that drove his alleged actions. Fastow was even called to testify during Walshe's trial. Brian and Ana have three children. Brian and the kids were in Massachusetts, where he was awaiting sentencing in a federal fraud case after he pleaded guilty to selling counterfeit Andy Warhol paintings. During testimony on December 8, Matthew Sheehan with the State Police Crime Lab testified that investigators found several bottles of hydrogen peroxide along with a bloody knife when they searched Walshe's home on January 8, 2023. On Friday, jurors were sent home after deliberating for more than three hours. They will resume deliberations on December 15 at 9 a.m. The trial lasted eight days before the case was turned over to the jury.
