Ethan Hawke opened up about his remorse for daughter Maya Hawke not having an easy childhood. "There were a lot of things about her childhood that were really, really hard and complicated, and things I regret for her," Ethan, 55, said of his eldest daughter in Variety & CNN's "Actors on Actors" conversation with Sydney Sweeney that dropped on Thursday, December 11. Ethan shares Maya, 27, and son Levon, 23, with ex-wife Uma Thurman in addition to daughters Clementine Jean and Indiana, whom he welcomed with current wife, Ryan Shawhughes Hawke. While Ethan didn't reveal what hardships Maya struggled with, the Black Phone actor added that when she was "about 4," he could tell that his daughter was going to "be an artist." Why Maya Hawke Thinks Her Family Is the 'Boring, Indie Kardashians' "I knew that she was gonna be a very good one," he reflected. "That was her safe place, watercoloring, dancing, singing all throughout her childhood." Ethan recalled how Maya was able to freely express herself. "Anything that had to do with human communication was something she vibrated to," he said. "I remember some teacher said, 'Maya, are you happy?' Cause they were worried about her. And she said something to the effect of, 'Do you really think that's the question?'" Ethan shared that he was so proud of how profound his daughter was at a young age. "I thought, 'I love this kid,'" he continued. "She was about 13. [Maya said] 'I don't think that's a very interesting question. I think there's a lot more interesting questions than whether I'm happy or not. Am I happy? No. But I don't aspire to be happy.'" Ethan was ultimately right about Maya as she's become a star in her own right. Maya has appeared in multiple movies, including Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Do Revenge, Asteroid City, Maestro and more. She is best known for her starring role as Robin Buckley in Stranger Things. Maya also has multiple projects in the works, including the upcoming films One Night Only, Wishful Thinking and The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. Earlier this year, Ethan opened up about how his daughter didn't need any advice from him to launch her career. Maya Hawke Isn't Ashamed to Be a 'Nepo Baby' "She didn't care what I thought. There was no stopping her, and that's the right attitude. Because if that's the attitude you have, it actually can't go badly. My line about it is, if your focus is what you can give the arts, you're going to be really happy. And if your focus is what can the arts give you back, you're going to be really unhappy," Ethan said in an October interview with AARP. "But if you really love it and you'd like to teach it and you'd like to be a part of it in any capacity, then good things happen." That same month, Maya shared that one of her dad's performances inspired her to become an actress. "I get asked all the time what movies made me become an actress," she said in an October interview with Autre. "But really, the three things that made me want to be an actress were my dad doing The Winter's Tale with Rebecca Hall, [and Lily Rabe] in The Merchant of Venice and As You Like It. Those three shows made me realize: that's the kind of woman I want to become, with that kind of strength and grace."
