A woman is facing several criminal counts after she was linked to the death of a newborn baby five years, when the body was found in a suitcase in the northern suburbs of Illinois. Police in Riverwoods, Illinois, claimed that Natalie Schram gave birth to the baby in May 2020, according to ABC7 Chicago. It's believed that she then put the deceased baby's body in a suitcase and abandoned it in a wooded area. Schram, 40, was arrested in early December in Washington State and has since been charged in connection to the crime. She was released on Thursday, December 4, after she paid a $250,000 cash bond, according to News Nation. Upon her release, Schram - who was formerly known as Natalie Borg - agreed to waive extradition proceedings. She appeared in court on Thursday, December 11, and pleaded not guilty to the charges, according to WGN News. She is currently facing several Class 4 felony charges, including two counts of concealment of death, abuse of corpse and failure to report the death or disappearance of a child under 13 years of age. If she is convicted, each charge carries a sentence of one to three years in prison. 90 Day Fiance's Leida Accused of Identity Theft Months After Baby's Death Veteran Riverwoods detective David Martinovich told WGN News that other charges could potentially be added, "depending on where the investigation leads us," he said. "It's not done yet. I'm still hopeful that we'll be able to get some calls from people ... that could provide much-needed information to add more charges and potentially other suspects." Schram and her husband declined to share a comment with the media when they left the Lake County Courthouse following the hearing on December 11. After the baby's body was found, an investigation was launched into the matter, and it was determined that the body belonged to a newborn infant. An extensive investigation eventually connected Schram to the crime. She was tracked down to Washington state, where she had relocated after allegedly committing the crime. Martinovich also reflected on the case while talking to WGN-TV, saying that it was a "difficult investigation." He added that Lake County Water Department workers first discovered the baby's body while checking sewer lines for blockages. "They discovered a package, a suitcase, on the residential property and saw a piece of clothing hanging out of it," Martinovich explained. "They opened up the suitcase and saw there were bones in there. They called their boss, and their boss called us." Martinovich went on to state that the department was not initially able to determine the baby's gender, cause of death or come up with suspects through DNA at the time of the discovery. "They were able to develop a profile and from that, we did a lot more investigative work." The investigation remains ongoing.
