As Travis Kelce prepares to tie the knot with fiancée Taylor Swift, Magic Johnson is sharing his best marriage advice for the couple and others like them. "Well, I think, No. 1 is [to] remember who you fell in love with and don't try to change them," Johnson, 66, exclusively told Us Weekly at the annual Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Ripple of Hope Award Gala in New York on Tuesday, December 9. Johnson (real name Earvin "Magic" Johnson Jr.) said his next piece of advice would be to "keep the line of communication open." "Even if you disagree about something, never go to bed upset at each other. So, work it out," the former basketball player added, noting that he and his wife, Cookie Johnson, always work out any conflicts before going to bed. Magic Johnson Praises 'Power Couple' Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Third, Magic said, "Don't forget date night because a lot of times when kids come or you're working your job, the thing that you fell in love with from that person, you were going out, you were having a good time on your date nights." The businessman recalled going to the movies for his first date with Cookie, 66, and said that they "still" go to the movies together "after 30-something years." "We still have date night or we'll go to dinner. So, we're still having a good time because we didn't forget about date night. Even with the kids, we carved that out. That was so important," Magic, who shares son EJ, 33, and daughter Elisa, 30, with Cookie, continued. (Magic also shares son Andre, 44, with ex-girlfriend Melissa Mitchell.) The They Call Me Magic star also encouraged couples to "support each other," recalling how he supported Cookie when she started her denim line, CJ by Cookie Johnson. Sameer Al-Doumy / AFP "I've been a businessman for almost 40 years and guess what? She's supported that," Magic added. "So, that's what it's about. You've got to support each other." Magic, who was one of the honorees for the Ripple of Hope Award at Tuesday's gala, said the "most important" piece of advice he could give is to "keep everybody [else] out of your relationship." "Always remember to make yours, yours," he concluded. "Don't try to be like somebody else. Cookie and I never try to be like somebody else." Magic and Cookie tied the knot in 1991 after 14 years together. Back in October, he exclusively told Us that the Believing in Magic author is not only his wife, but also his "best friend." Travis Kelce Shares His Best Proposal Advice After Taylor Swift Engagement "Cookie is a caretaker and she takes care of myself, our kids, our grandchildren and all of her friends. She's a woman of God, and it's a blessing," he gushed. Magic's marriage advice on Tuesday comes after Swift, 35, and Kelce, 36, announced their engagement in August after two years of dating. "Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married," the pop star captioned photos from the proposal. A source exclusively told Us in October that Swift and Kelce are looking to tie the knot next summer, possibly in Rhode Island, where the "Lover" singer has a house. "They don't want a long engagement," the insider said, adding that the couple "very much wants to start a family in the next year or so. Family means everything to them."
