Comedian Andy Dick has been outspoken about his addiction battle through the years. "The main thing that I've struggled with over the years, as an actor and really as a person, is the abuse of drugs and alcohol," Dick said in a February 2015 YouTube video for The Artists Project LA. "I'm in recovery [and] I have a lot of months behind me and hopefully many, many more years ahead of me." Dick continued, "It's been a long, rough, up and down, winding, inside-out, tumbly rocky road for me. ... My main advice [that] I give to people is keep going, don't give up if you fall off the horse [and then] get back on it and go for it." The Andy Dick Show alum has checked into drug rehabilitation programs upwards of 20 times. Reports surfaced in December 2025 that Dick was administered Narcan medication after an apparent overdose. Keep scrolling for Dick's candid quotes about his addiction struggles and journey to sobriety: Deciding to Seek Treatment Dick checked himself into a treatment facility in 2014 after previous failed stints. "I had to stop drinking, or I was going to die," he told Vice two years later in 2016. "I could see it very clearly. I was bleeding out of my ass. I was going to die. I would always say that I didn't have a problem with drugs and alcohol, but I would drink when I was happy, when I was sad, when I was anxious. Without drugs or alcohol, I was depressed, frustrated, angry." According to Dick, drinking and using drugs eventually "just stopped being fun." "Honestly, it just stopped being fun when I was crawling around on the floor to find the phone, not able to dial because both my hands were shaking," he said. "When I would get ahold of one of the recovery centers, they would hang up when they found out it was me. No one wanted to help me because I was unhelpable. Why would they bring me in just to have me die in their bed?" Learning Lessons From His Son Dick told Vice in 2016 that his son Jacob also struggles with addiction. "He was going crazy from speed, trying to set things on fire. I was drinking heavily, saying, 'That kid needs help!' Three months into his sobriety, it hit me hard that I'm an a**hole," Dick told the outlet. "I couldn't even come to terms with what a dick I was. I was obviously the one with the real problem. So, I made a deal with him that I would stay in treatment as long as he did. He not only completed treatment, he works at the clinic as a technician." Fifteen-Month Milestone After marking his 15th month of sobriety in 2016, Dick revealed why each day was "cause for celebration." "I'm one of those 'special needs' cases. Seriously, I was written off by most people, and rightfully so. I was slowly dying, and I was frighteningly OK with it," Dick wrote via Facebook. "My last chance this time around came through family members. One of my kids checked into Soba Recovery Center and got sober. I was skeptical, having already done my time at over 13 rehabs costing hundreds of thousands of dollars." Dick initially thought he had "nothing to lose" from trying Soba's program, giving it his all. "I knew I was going to die soon anyways. That was 15 and a half months ago," he added. "Today, I can say that Soba has given me my life and my family back. We are all kicking butt and loving life and each other! Soba takes a different approach to sobriety. They don't just line us up, shove us in treatment for 28 to 30 days and then spit us out into the real world to figure it out, flounder, and ultimately fail again. It's the most comprehensive, safe, caring facility in the world." Leaning on Community "I've seen plenty of friends die from this disease unexpectedly and abruptly. It's the community that makes the difference," Dick wrote via Facebook in 2016. "We have a large loving sober community over here [at Soba] ready to take you in as one of our own. That's coming directly from me because I still live here." Staying Sober for 'Dancing With the Stars' Dick was cast on Dancing With the Stars in 2013, where he agreed to stay sober for the duration of the show. "I had to have a meeting with [production]. I think they basically just wanted me to show up not drunk," he told Entertainment Tonight at the time. "Everybody seems concerned. In fact, later on today I have a meeting with my therapist, and I have a case manager believe or not." Dick, who was partnered with pro Sharna Burgess for season 16 and was eliminated during the seventh week, explained that he "hired somebody to monitor things."
