Us Weekly breaks down everything to know about the new show, as well as Meehan's crimes and the other pop culture projects that have taken a look into his story. Netflix Announces New Dirty John Docuseries Meehan was one of the first "rom-conmen" to make headlines for his crimes, which involved wooing women, marrying them and then stealing from them. In a press release from Netflix's Tudum, it was announced that the streaming service will release a new docuseries about Meehan being produced by Bunim/Murray Productions and Empress Films. Emma Cooper (The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes) has been tapped to direct the project, while Julie Pizzi, Jesse Daniels and Melissa G. Moore will executive produce. Who Was John Meehan? Meehan was a con artist who told several lies in order to steal from the women he romanced. He went to extreme lengths to impress women, often lying to them in order to get them to like him. He married his first wife, Tonia Sells, in 1990. Their marriage began with a lie, as he told Sells that he was 26 instead of his real age of 31. Meehan then studied anesthesiology. However, he later lost his license to work as a nurse anesthetist after police caught him with a loaded gun and 45 empty containers for six medications he stole from a hospital he once worked at, according to A&E. Eric Bana as John Meehan and Connie Britton as Debra Newell. Michael Becker/Bravo Ohio police launched an investigation into Meehan after a group of anesthesiologists accused him of stealing drugs that he should have been administering to his patients. Meehan and Sells - who shared two children together - later split in 2000 and their divorce was finalized in 2001. Following their split, Sells took Meehan to court when he began to harass and threaten her. Meehan was ultimately convicted of menacing and received a suspended sentence, per A&E. His legal troubles continued in 2002 when he was sentenced to serve 17 months in a Michigan prison after he pleaded guilty to drug theft charges. Meehan later married his second wife, Debra Newell, in 2005 after a short romance. Newell's kids quickly expressed their concerns about Meehan, with her daughter Terra Newell encouraging her mom to leave him. Newell eventually came to terms with the fact that Meehan was lying to her, and she opted to annul their marriage. Meehan then went after Terra, who he believed was responsible for the split, attacking in a Newport Beach, California, parking lot, in August 2016. He arrived at the scene with a "kidnap kit," which included duct tape, cable ties and knives. While Meehan was able to injure her, Terra wrangled the knife away from Meehan and stabbed him several times in the head, arms and chest. Following the attack, Meehan was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries. Dirty John's Story Has Been Documented in Pop Culture Netflix's upcoming docuseries is not the first project to share Meehan's story. His crimes first made headlines with the 2017 "Dirty John" podcast, which was hosted by journalist Christopher Goffard and focused on Meehan's life and exploits.
