[Warning: Potentially Triggering Content] Every so often, a viral video forces us all to stop and ask how something so cruel could happen in a place as ordinary as a mall food court. Sadly, over the weekend, that moment arrived courtesy of a Cinnabon restaurant in Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin. There, a worker's horrifying outburst toward two customers lit up TikTok and spread with heartbreaking speed. And now, it has left a Black Muslim couple shaken and a community asking tough questions about the rising tide of open racism. It showed a white female employee behind that Wisconsin Cinnabon counter hurling racial slurs, cursing, and taunting customers who had come in for a treat while taking a break from shopping. The customers who filmed the outburst say the incident began over a caramel pecan cinnamon roll. After asking for more caramel because the roll didn't appear to have enough, the woman who recorded the interaction claimed the worker snapped at her, insulted her hijab, and escalated the situation into something worse. At one point, the video captured the employee delivering an obscene hand gesture, throwing insults, and declaring: "I am racist and I'll say it to the whole entire world. Don't be disrespectful." Once the clip started spreading, Cinnabon moved quickly. They confirmed in a statement on multiple social media platforms that the franchise owner fired the employee immediately after learning what happened. The company's statement read: "We've seen the disturbing video from the Cinnabon bakery in Ashwaubenon, WI, and we do not condone this behavior. The former employee was immediately terminated by the franchise owner. Their actions do not reflect our values or the welcoming experience every guest deserves." Cinnabon later expanded on its position in a follow-up comment to the Associated Press, doubling down on its condemnation of the worker's actions: "Their actions and statements are completely unacceptable and in no way reflect the values of Cinnabon, our franchisees, or the welcoming environment we expect for every guest and team member." The couple involved, described in an online fundraiser as a Black Somali Muslim pair, have reportedly been traumatized by what happened. Yet in a bizarre twist, a competing online fundraiser created to support the fired employee has raised tens of thousands of dollars. It appears on the same crowdfunding platform that previously generated hundreds of thousands of dollars for a Minnesota woman who admitted to using a racist slur against a Black child earlier this year. That is a disturbing trend... Related: New Morgan Wallen Racism Scandal! Edward Ahmed Mitchell, national deputy director of the Council of American-Islamic Relations, addressed the incident in a statement to CBS News and others that cut straight to the heart of the matter: "We welcome Cinnabon's decision to hold this employee accountable for her vile and racist rant against Black Muslim customers. The fact that this employee felt comfortable calling a Black couple the n-word on camera is a sign of how acceptable anti-Black and anti-Somali racism has become. Our political leaders, including President Trump, must stop fomenting hatred against Americans of Somali descent." Seriously. By the way, you can see the disturbing Cinnabon video for yourself HERE. Watching the video makes it clear this story is about more than a cinnamon roll: it's about the growing boldness of people willing to spew racism without fear of consequences, and the emotional toll that takes on the victims forced to endure it.
