The play, written by Pulitzer Prize finalist Clare Barron, is the second theater production to join the lineup of the Cherry Lane Theatre, which reopened in September after being purchased by film studio A24. Produced by Cherry Lane Theatre and Matt Ross, the production is scheduled to begin previews Feb. 12, 2026, with an opening night Feb. 23. The limited run is scheduled through March 29. The play, which first ran Off-Broadway in 2014, follows Mae (Shawkat) as she returns to her hometown to take care of her sick father after the loss of her job and her boyfriend. She then meets a mysterious stranger who makes her realize that she may be more drawn to the unknown than the familiarity of her own family. Additional cast members will be announced at a later date. "The chance to revisit this play with Anne Kauffman is a dream come true," Barron said. "We both got older. Who knows if we're wiser! But it's a beautiful experience to see the play through a new lens with a new venture on a precious, old stage. Life and intimacy continue to confound." This is the stage debut for Shawkat, who is known for her roles as Maeby Funke in Fox's Arrested Development and Dory in HBO's Search Party. She most recently appeared in Atropia, winner of the Sundance Grand Jury Prize and produced by Luca Guadagnino, and will next appear in Neon's The Wrong Girls, opposite Kristen Stewart and Seth Rogen. Additional film credits include Blink Twice and Being the Ricardos.
