Californian authorities have accused a father and his wife of allegedly abusing his 14-month-old daughter to death over the course of several months, officials confirmed to Us Weekly. Alfredo Muñoz Jr., 40, and Kelly Anelalani Muñoz, 34, have each been charged with single counts of murder, torture and assault on a child causing death stemming from the toddler's killing. The small victim in this case has only been identified as "Tilly S." Kelly is the girl's stepmother. The couple were arrested on November 25, according to a press release issued by the Long Beach Police Department. During a hearing that occurred on Monday, December 1, Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Brian Rosenberg alleged in court that the couple "broke multiple bones over numerous incidents" dating back to July 1. The most recent happened on November 7, when the Long Beach Police Department received a possible child abuse report from staff at Miller Children's Hospital in Long Beach. Police were told that the little girl had been found "unresponsive and with signs of trauma," it is alleged in the release. Despite being put on life support, the little girl died three days later from her severe injuries. Detectives handling the investigation alleged they soon learned "there had been on-going abuse to the child and the victim's death was a result of abuse from her father and stepmother," according to the release. The two defendants are both being held on $3 million bond each. Nathan J. Hochman. Jim Vondruska/Getty Images "The tragic death of this little girl is a heartbreaking reminder of the sacred responsibility we all share to protect our children from harm," Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said in a statement. "Our Office is committed to seeking justice for Tilly and ensuring those responsible are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law." This is not the first time that Alfredo Muñoz has been in trouble with the law. Back in 2021, he was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of willful cruelty to a child causing possible injury or death, the Los Angeles Times reported. It was unclear on Thursday when Alfredo was released from prison, and the details surrounding his 2021 crime were unavailable at press time. The couple are due back in court for an arraignment hearing on December 16. They have not been asked to enter pleas. If convicted, each defendant faces a maximum sentence of 32 years to life in state prison. Erik and Lyle Menendez's Family Guide: Who Supports Them and Who Doesn't? The judge in the case also approved a temporary restraining order sought by prosecutors, intended to protect the couple's four other children. Alfredo and Kelly have been barred from coming within 100 yards away from any home, workplace or vehicle containing the children. They also cannot call the kids, whose ages were not released.
