While some famous people are refreshingly self-aware about the protective moat of wealth and privilege, many have been infuriatingly out of touch. Here are 18 of the most out-of-touch celeb moments of 2025: 1. In July, Sydney Sweeney sparked massive backlash for her American Eagle jeans ad, which was accused of promoting eugenics and whiteness. American Eagle / Via youtube.com Responding to the criticism, American Eagle released the following statement: "'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans' is and always was about jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone." Sydney's response to the backlash drew further criticism. She told GQ, "I did a jean ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I'm literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life... [The president and VP speaking about the ad] was surreal." Then, when GQ features director Katherine Stoeffel asked her point blank about the criticism that "in this political climate, white people shouldn't joke about genetic superiority," Sydney said, "I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear." Other members of the all-female flight crew included Lauren Sánchez Bezos and Gayle King. The stunt was widely criticized as "performative feminism." Blue Origin / Via youtube.com Even other celebrities called Katy out. For example, on TikTok, Emily Ratajkowski said, "That space mission this morning? That's end-time shit. Like, this is beyond parody. Saying that you care about Mother Earth and it's about Mother Earth, and you're going up in a spaceship that is built and paid for by a company that's singlehandedly destroying the planet? Look at the state of the world and think about how many resources went into putting these women into space... For what? What was the marketing there? And then to try to make it... I'm disgusted. Literally, I'm disgusted." Emily Ratajkowski / Via tiktok.com On her Instagram story, Olivia Wilde shared a meme comparing Katy kissing the ground when she returned to earth to "getting off a commercial flight in 2025." The director added, "Billion dollars bought some good memes I guess." I know this probably is not the cool thing to say, but there are so many other things that are so important in the world right now. There's one astronaut. What are you guys going to do up in space? ... If you wanna go up to space, why do you need to tell us about it? I know this is probably obnoxious, but like, it's so much money to go to space, and there's a lot of people who can't even afford eggs... Space exploration was to further our knowledge and to help mankind. What are they gonna do up there that has made it better for us down here?" NBC / Via youtube.com 3. In June, Latto told Complex's 360 With Speedy that being able to buy anything she wants is "kinda boring." She said, "I was a millionaire at 21. So it's like, you grow up fast, already being in the industry at a young age, and then when you have a lot of money at a young age, too. I think I get the most 'fun' spoiling everybody around me now. I spend more money on other people than I do myself. I be so stingy with my money for myself... It's boring. Money is not... I don't think that's what everybody should be chasing. It's fun, don't get me wrong, [but people should be chasing] true happiness." Complex / Via youtube.com She continued, "The average person don't have a lot of money. I think we chase it, like, 'OK I gotta get this money.' Then when you get this money, it's like, damn. Now what? And I don't even have billions yet, you know - heavy on the yet... [Spending a lot] just gets old fast... Obviously, it has its pros, but I don't know if it's the best thing for a 21-year-old to be seeing that much money that fast. Like, it kinda takes away life's experiences." Complex / Via youtube.com Her quote drew widespread criticism across social media. One viral response, which got 338K likes on Tw
