Singer Jessie J has had her fair share of significant health scares - and according to the artist, they have almost always followed bouts of massive success. "I just got my first record deal, and I had a stroke," the artist revealed in an interview with The Guardian published on Saturday, November 29. "Then when I was about to put out music in 2020 I had a car crash and my larynx moved up and I couldn't sing for a year." That's not all for the singer, real name Jessica Cornish, who told the outlet she has faced a slew of health issues in lockstep with her career. "Honestly, I feel life goes, 'You having a good time? Sit down,'" she explained. "Ever since I was a child, it has always gone alongside moments of success for me; something severe or obscure has happened to my health." Jessie J Diagnosed With 'Early Breast Cancer': 'Your Girl Needs a Hug' At 11, while making her West End debut in Whistle Down the Wind - a role she secured when she was 9 - she was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, a health condition that can cause an irregular, fast heartbeat, dizziness and heart palpitations. "I was going in and out of rehearsals on an IV drip, and going back into [the] hospital at night," she explained. Most recently, the singer revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy - a secret she kept hidden from her many devout fans despite being consistently candid about her many ups and downs, including suffering from endometriosis, miscarriages and more. "I come out with a song called 'No Secrets.' I'm doing every interview, and they're, like, 'So what's new with you?' and I'm, like, 'Ern, yeah, nothing..." she said of that time period, adding that she had canceled tour dates while waiting to undergo reconstructive surgery. Jessie J Karwai Tang/WireImage Jessie J was diagnosed in March, shortly after she found a lump in her breast. "I immediately went to get it looked at, had an ultrasound, and they were, like, 'It looks like nothing; you've got really good dense breast issue,'" she said. "And I was, like, 'But I can feel it. I've got an achy arm and pins and needles in my hands whenever I wake up.' And they said, 'Well, let's do just a biopsy.' That was 28 March, the day after my birthday." Two weeks later, she received her diagnosis - a shock to the singer, who told the outlet that at that point she had "convinced herself it was nothing." "We're two weeks away from launching this thing after eight years without an album and four years without a single," she recalled. "And she [the doctor] texted and said, 'Are you free at six?' And I was, like, 'Oh, it's a Zoom, it won't be anything.' So I jump on the Zoom thinking it's all going to be good, and she goes, 'Are you sitting down?' You know that sad tone they use? And she says, 'I'm so, so sorry, but your test results have come back as high-grade cancer cells.'" Jessie J Gives Update After Infection Hospitalization Amid Cancer Diagnosis According to Jessie J, her immediate reaction was to consider the timing - not just because she was preparing to release new music for the first time in years, but because she also was a mom to a 1-year-old son after years of trying to conceive and failing to carry a pregnancy to term. "I said, 'Oh, that's not ideal, is it?"" she said. "That's not f***ing great timing.' The first thing I thought was, 'I can't die because my son needs me.'" Despite her health struggles both past and present, the singer says her life - especially her childhood - has not been defined by her physical struggles. "My mum and dad always did such a great job of not making that the definitive thing in my life, and not making me define my character by my worst days," she said. "That was amazing and has carried me through now. They've made me live life more, eat better, work out more. Made me live in the moment."
