Lili Reinhart has captivated audiences with her performances in Riverdale, as well as in Hal and Harper, but she's also known for her advocacy for mental health and body image. Manny Carabel / Getty Images Earlier this year, she was praised for being open about her interstitial cystitis diagnosis while also searching for answers about a mysterious autoimmunity/inflammatory disease. "I was inspired to talk about this after my grandmother was ignored by doctors for months when exhibiting clear symptoms of cancer - and it was only after her own strength and advocation for herself that she was given a blood test that diagnosed her. And by then, the cancer had spread," she shared via Instagram."The most important thing I have taken away from this experience is the absolute need to advocate for your own health." Now, Lili has opened up on the Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky podcast about how she's prioritizing her well-being after stopping antidepressants and birth control. "My body changed so - it felt like so quickly, but slowly." Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky / youtu.be "When I went off my antidepressants, I realized I had a plethora of other things that were being subdued by medication," she told Monica, sharing that it was "good to know [the medications are] actually doing something." Gilbert Flores / Getty Images "But I realized I have really bad ADD, and I have horrible PMDD," she added. When Monica said she didn't know what that was, Lili said, "Premenstrual dysphoric disorder." Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky / youtu.be According to the National Institutes of Health, PMDD is a "constellation of mood, behavioral, and physical indications that occur in a cyclic pattern prior to menstruation and then wane off after the menstrual period in women of reproductive age." NIH states that 5% to 8% of women can have moderate-to-severe symptoms from depression, anxiety, fatigue, physical pain, and personality disorders. However, the exact cause of PMDD is unknown. "So, the week before my period, I feel suicidal," Lili shared. "And I didn't know that I felt that way until I wasn't on medication." Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky / youtu.be "But people go on those meds and birth control to suppress that feeling, so it makes sense I went off birth control and antidepressants, and suddenly I felt those feelings," Lili continued, describing that it was wild she had this condition "bubbling under the surface." Amanda Edwards / Getty Images "I thought everyone feels like shit before their period, but two years ago, I remember texting my mom and saying, 'I genuinely feel suicidal,' and then it was a week later, I would get my period and go, 'Oh,'" she said. "And then it kept happening every month." Emma Mcintyre / Getty Images "Now I learned, I'm on the clock with it and understand, 'Okay this is the day that it's maybe gonna happen, let's be careful with ourselves a few days prior,'" Lili explained. "And I write it down in my little notes app. I keep track of my symptoms and the day I actually get it and stuff like that, so I can sort of track what day am I gonna feel the worst?" Nbc / Getty Images "It's incredibly interesting how the no meds has enlightened me because I was on medication for 14 years, and I went off, I remember because I didn't know what it was doing," Lili shared, explaining that she's still pro-medication, but it was vital for her to see how she felt without it.
