Soccer star Sydney Leroux revealed to fans that she was diagnosed with anorexia, something she has been "living with for as long" as she can remember. Leroux, 35, shared an emotional video via Instagram on Wednesday, November 26, in which she explained her hope that being honest about her condition could help someone else. "My story is just one of many. It's what we hide from, feel ashamed of and completely avoid," she wrote in the caption. "Research shows that 1 in 5 female athletes show signs of disordered eating and in high pressure sports the rates can hit 40% or more. Eating disorders don't disappear because we stay silent. They thrive in it." She continued, "I refuse to let my fear continue to keep me quiet. We need to talk about the things we've avoided for way too long. I'm speaking up, hoping it opens the door to safer, more honest dialogue around eating disorders in women's sports, because silence never saved anyone." Lucy Hale and More Stars Who Have Battled Eating Disorders In the video, Leroux admitted she was "absolutely terrified" to come forward with her diagnosis. But I will never let my fear be bigger than the possibility of saving someone's life," she said. "I didn't think it was a problem," Leroux added. "I just thought that that was the way my body reacted to the pressure." The Angel City FC forward stressed the importance of discussing the issue, which she reminded fans is prevalent in women's sports. "It's here to stay and we don't talk about it and I want to change that," she said. "And I hope that this message reaches someone and know that you are not alone and that there is hope and recovery and I'm here for you." Sydney Sweeney's Best Body Positivity Quotes - And Clapbacks! Hugging you so so tight! From one ED conquerer to another. We are here for you and are with you! Have faith you WILL get through this." Leroux's message comes eight months after she announced she was stepping away from soccer to focus on her mental health and her family. At the time, Leroux said that she owed it to herself and her kids to "take a step back and take care" of herself. (Leroux and ex-husband Dom Dwyer share son Cassius, 9, and daughter Roux, 6.) Lily Allen Says 'Eating Has Become a Real Issue' Amid Mental Health Issues "This is one of the hardest things I've ever had to say or admit to myself. But after a lot of reflection, I've made the difficult decision to stay away from soccer for my mental health," she wrote via Instagram at the time. "Anyone who knows me knows I'm a fighter - I always have been. I take pride in pushing through, in showing up, in giving everything I have." She continued, "I've always prided myself on being honest, authentic and true to who I am both on and off the field and this moment is no different. To everyone who has supported me, loved me, and believed in me - thank you. This isn't goodbye. I will be back, just like always in true Syd fashion."
